Hi Guys, how you all doing?
i have read some posts on this forum and concluded to myself that you guys know your stuff, which is great as i do not :(

Anyway a little (sorry a lot) about me and my problem, i dj and i bought a brand new piece of kit which is a Vestax VCI-300 (google it to get more of an idea) as dj'n is now goind down the digitl road, anyway i purchased a refurb laptop an Advent 5301 which was barely months old with intel dual core 1.83Ghz and 2Gb of ram, running vista HP these specs are way above the specs required to run the DJ hardware, anyway i purposely bought the laptop to run with the hardware, at first everything seemed fine and then BSOD, this has happened many times and i have since sent the hardware back to which it has been tested and returned, no faults reported at vestax. my laptop i returned to PC world where it was purchased from, tech guys there were not very helpful, they asked me to do a full reinstall which i have done many times and problem remains. i will copy below the couple of crash dumps i have, there were more but these have been deleted, i'm tearing out my hair and hope that someone can shed light upon my frustrations.
i have also subscribed to driver update site and d/l latest drivers, i dunno what else i can do, all i know is its definately not the vestax DJ unit as not only was it tested back at vestax but they also replaced the main board in it just to be sure.
PS i have tried all USB ports, the unit works for so long then BSOD and restart

Well, I'm no expert (or even amateur), but I have lived through computer hell before. Since you said it's a refurb, I suspect that something on the motherboard may have been shaken loose when they refurbished it (because something had to be broken before they refurbished it). I used to have a Compaq Presario Laptop that had a bad motherboard, which cause strange symptoms from video glitches to full BSODs and data corruption. I think you should use BIOS to run a HD scan (Google it, it's easy to do), and if that doesn't find anything wrong, bring it into PC World and tell them (act like you know what you're doing) to run a full system diagnostic, I can virtually guarantee something is wrong.

Mynaras

hi there
i have already done this as i was sick of it restarting but this is just as bad as i get the bsod then i have to restart it myself. is there a way to screen capture the bsod? the reason i ask is because when it happens i cannot do anything with it othere than turn it off.
thanks for your assistance

best regards
rob

hi dai and many thanks for your kind assistance
i have done this before, i had to do this for the vestax support forum a couple of weeks ago, please bare with me and i will log onto there forum and copy and paste what i sent them.

PS mentoned in the thread above is scanning HD using bios... sorry to sound a little dim but how do i do this? is it a simple scan tool provided by other companies such as esupport.com? i did this just 5 mins ago and it listed all my systems and listed what was bad and what was good etc.
PS bios camu up with an X against it. dont want to really fork out anymore cash as i already have with a company called driver agent thinking this would help as it listed a few bad drivers, anyway i d/l them thinking i had it cracked but no cigar :(

pasted bsod message to follow. 2 ticks

causes found from searches

ram
run memtest on the ram 1 stick at a time

the only ms kb on it is for win server 2003 which lists the cause as removing a usb device without using the safely remove option
the other one is to many usb devices connected trying to draw to much power
if this is the case use a self powered hub

hi dai.
sorry for sounding dumb but i do not understand above statement "the only ms kb on it is for win server 2003"

also i have not removed any device without using the safe removal tool as i have not had any storage device connected. the vestax takes its power from USB, it can also run on an adaptor which i have used before and stil had a crash.
PS the vestax controller is the only USB device i have ever attached.

thanks
Rob

PPs how do i run a mem test? i have used the memory diagnostic tool in vista which found no faults, is there another you can reccomend??

hi joeten, if it has then its not been done by me, as i said i bought it from PC world as a refurb, it was only couple o month old and was like new. PS there are 4 usb ports and ive used music controller on each one.

my sole purpose for purchasing laptop was because it had specs required by vestax and it has no other programs on it other than what i need. to be honest it runs superb for everything its just this niggling bsod i get when using it with my DJ kit. i know its not the DJ kit and its probably a simple fix, but its just getting that fix which is the nagging problem.

like i said Dai i was unsure if my comments were correct so ive posted the question on there forum to get an answer however as they are in new zealand and i in UK there is a significant time difference.

if there was a problem with the onboard one would that not transfer to the powered one?

cheers

yeah that makes sence, so would your recomendation now Dai be for me to purchase a powered usb device?

it would be great if i knew what my usb connections supply in the way of power and the vestax draws.

ahhh (i just remembered) i tried using a 9v power adaptor with the vestax and still got bsod so this is not a fix as the adaptor was powering unit and not the usb...

i'm guessing this problem is tricky and the only suggestion is to return it to PC world???

#23 ·
hi rob just to clarify it was as i said just a thought i did not think you had caused any problem. at this point it seems more and more like something on the board has issues with the usb so go with dai on this and return it

#24 ·
yeah joeten i understand i know you did not mean that i had caused a problem:wink:

its got me baffled guys as i have been using the unit this evening for a couple of hours and no bsod, puzzling as i know next time it will probably crash, its tempromental to say the least:4-dontkno

probably still worth returning i suppose:sigh:

sorry dai for my ignorance but i'm afraid you will have to eloborate, i just dont have the computer knowledge you guys have, can you break it down in stages?
thanks for your assistance pal i really do appreciate your help.

if you look at the time when it freezes

then go into the error logs which will have the time of the occurrence alongside of it

then match the two times up

post what it reports as the problem

you access the error logs through admin tools in the control panel

#32 ·
ok guys this is what i found in the error logs around the time of the bsod's.

ERROR-SIDE BY SIDE EVENT ID-11 TASK CATEGORY-NONE
ERROR-EVENT LOG EVENT ID-6008 "
ERROR-SERVICE MANAGER EVENT LOG PROVIDER EVENT ID-7000
ERROR-SERVICE CONTROL MANAGER EVENT LOG PROVIDER EVENT ID-7001
ERROR-DISTRIBUTEDCOM EVENT ID-10005
ERROR-HTTPEVENT EVENT ID-15016

please note that these are what i found in multiple error logs around the times of the crashes, i went through each one picking out those with times the same or near enough whan bsod happened.

any further info required let me know
cheers

because there are a number of different causes for each occasion
see what is listed down below when you click on each error and see if it gives a better indication
click on the ms link and see what they have to say is the problem also
