Hiya everyone!
I am having trouble with my disc drive...it acknowledges that a disc has been put in and whirrs etc but wont start it up! I have tried different discs but it is doing the same thing. It also says windows cannot format this type of disc....all im trying to do is connect my laptop to my printer with the setup disc. I have tried cleaning the laser, disabling the drive, and have done a system restore but it still doesn't work. Is there anything else I can do? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks :banghead:
im using Windows 7 on a Dell Latitude 120l laptop. I don't know why it says that...its confused me. No discs are working...it knows theres a disc in there but just doesn't read it. :-/
if the drive is recognised in my computer and in the BIOS then its very likely the lazer diode is knackered. I would suggest trying a proper lazer cleaner to see if that works before trying anything else.
Laser lenses in optical drives fail. If you have had it less then one year, you can send it back to the manufacturer for a free replacement. Other then that they are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace.
do you think that's what it could be? I don't want to go to a shop and pay a stupid amount of money for them to 'fix' it when it could be something simple. Where can I get a new lense from? Thanks
You don't Fix them. You can buy a brand new drive for about $20.00. So, it is not cost effective to fix them. You can send it back the manufacturer, if you like, who will repair it and send it back as a Refurbished unit.
Hi, before you put a new drive in (actually it is not called a "disk drive" rather an "optical drive") you should check your services registry entry and also see if windows (wmi) recognizes the drive, if it does it should work.
Go to start search and type cmd, right click on the returned cmd.exe and select "run as administrator" at the prompt copy paste:-
press enter , please post the notepad outcome here (copy paste)
