Hey,
I recently bought a AMD Phenom II X4 Black edition, and I installed it on my Pegatron M2N78-LA motherboard. Because I put an AM3 CPU on a AM2+ board, I get the error message "unsupported CPU installed, PC will power down," which it does a second later. Will a BIOS update to my motherboard let me use this processor? And if so how would I go about updating the BIOS?

CPU: Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDZ955FBGMBOX

Mobo: Motherboard Specifications, M2N78-LA (Violet) - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

The Phenom II Deneb isn't supported. This is from your motherboard's info:
Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:
•AMD Athlon X2 (Bt)
•AMD Athlon 64 X2 up to 6000+ (W)
•AMD Phenom Triple-Core up to 8xxx (AM2+) (Toliman)
•AMD Phenom Quad-Core 9xxx series (AM2+) up to 9850 (Agena)
Amazon.com: AMD Phenom 9850 BLACK EDITION 2.5GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Processor With FAN: Electronics

Or if you have a good heatsink already or want to buy an aftermarket one:

AMD Phenom X4 9850 Quad Core Processor HD9850XAJ4BGH - 2.50GHz, 4MB Cache, 2000MHz (4000 MT/s) FSB, Agena, Quad-Core, OEM, Socket AM2+, Processor at TigerDirect.com

I would seem that this is the top processor your motherboard allows. As far as I can tell no BIOS upgrades enable use of the Phenom II with your motherboard.
