My system was ok except that when attempting to open a web page (or chrome itself eventually) nothing would happen. No error message. The system would keep trying forever or sometimes time out. At first I overcame the problem by logging out and longing back in. That stopped working after a while. I thought it must be a virus so ran an avast boot time scan but nothing changed. The next morning things would work for a while but then stop. I ended up reinstalling the os from the installation disk. To my amazement the problem persists even after that!

The computer gets its internet signal wirelessly and displays that the signal is excellent, the computer is connected and there is internet access.

Problem doesn't always arise right away but only after using the computer for a while.

Difficult to research -- there are so many different variations on "browser unresponsive" or similar queries with many non-specific suggestions.

Lets take a peek at your network environment:

First:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then:

Remove all the stored wireless network profiles and search for the network again.

How to Remove Stored Wireless Network Profiles for XP, Vista, and Windows 7

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found, here's how

Then:

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type or copy and paste the following command:

ipconfig/all > 0 & notepad 0

and press enter.

Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB drive, or a CD-R disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

then please Download and run this Xirrus WiFi Inspector, click the Networks link on the upper left and paste a screen shot of that screen here. Note that this application requires NET Framework to run. If you get an error about a missing function, download and install NET Framework.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here. For Vista and Windows 7, 8 you can use the Windows Snipping Tool

There is another computer connected to the same wireless network and that computer does not have any problems at all. And as pointed out before, the affected computer's system says the signal is excellent, the computer is connected and there is internet access.

So am I wondering if that does not argue against the suggestions you are making.

Another development. I installed a distribution of an Linux Mint OS on some spare space on the primary drive. Using the preinstallation system, I opened Firefox and tried to open several pages. I had the same problem as before.

I am beginning to wonder if the network adapter on the affected computer is at fault. They are cheap enough, so I'm ordering some and will report the result.

Problem Not Solved After All

Right after I installed the new network adapter everything was working fine but after an hour or so the old syndrome returned, lack of response when trying to load web pages.

The same thing happened after trying other fixes, such as after I reinstalled the system from the win7 setup cd. Also, the system has been normal on some mornings only to go bad after a spell.

So I implemented the procedures advised by Old Rich in his previous message.

I power recyled everything but no change.

I removed stored network profiles, searched for and sucessfully reconnected to network. But when it came to loading web pages there was no change.

There were no proxy settings enabled.

I downloaded and tryed to install WiFi Inspector. Could not install it after several tries. Error message says make sure that the internet connection is active. But the system says we're connected and the signal is excellent -- five bars.

Sometimes, you can open a search engine (google or bing) and even bring up a search response, but eventually you get to the point where the system trys and trys but goes nowhere. Sometimes, if you back track and try again a page will come right up. That is the exception to the rule.

There are two other computers (laptops) on the home network and they aren't having any problem so it must be specific to the one desktop.

Re: [SOLVED] browser times out following reinstallation win 7

It seems to be connected to therouter with an IP address . . let's test for internet

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type or Copy and Paste the following" and press enter

echo > 0 & PING 10.0.0.1 >> 0 & PING 46.228.47.115 >> 0 & PING google.com >> 0 & tracert google.com >> 0 & echo [/php] >> 0 & notepad 0

That can take a few minutes to complete, come back and past the result in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Hi, good advice from Rich, I don't know why the text in the cmd looks as it does (at least on my machine) it should be:-

echo > 0 & PING 10.0.0.1 >> 0 & PING 46.228.47.115 >> 0 & PING google.com >> 0 & tracert google.com >> 0 & echo >> 0 & notepad 0

Press enter, a notepad will open this is what we need to see (I have removed the
PHP:
tag it is not needed here.

Specifically it's the ping of the router we are most interested in (ping 10.0.0.1) especially when the connection does not respond.

Hi, yes it does look like something is interfering with your connection, Avast would be my first point of call, you say windows firewall is inactive?

Open a cmd as admin as shown, and at the prompt run this cmd :-

echo > 0 & systeminfo >> 0 & netstat -r | more >> 0 & tasklist /v >> 0 & net start >> 0 & netsh int tcp show global >> 0 & echo >> 0 & notepad 0

Press enter, please post the notepad outcome here, you can remove the "hotfix's" these are windows updates and we do not need them, will make the list much smaller.

Next at an admin cmd type:-

netsh interface ip delete arpcache
(press enter)

Corruption here can cause connection issues. Windows will rebuild the cache.

Disabling Avast is apparently the solution. I'm now surfing like crazy and so far no hang ups.

I had tried disabling Avast before but could not find a place to do it on their program. Gave up too easy. This time I did a web search. The procedure is pretty oblique, but any hacker could search the web as easily as I.

Thank you very much and I hope I'm not back here right away.

I disabled avast and, voila, everything was fine. It was fine. Fine as ever, until around 4 pm when the dreaded problem came back.

This is the second time that it seemed everything was fixed only to have the problem come back as bad as ever. (See above)

I want to run the command in Jennae's message but I can't make out the character between "-r" and "more" or find out anything that looks like it on my keyboard.

Hi, yes the | is called a "pipe" and can be found above the \ key, as Rich says you don't need to type it just highlight the cmd's in red (one at a time) to do this select the cmd with your mouse and in the highligted text right click with your mouse and select copy. Then after you have opened your command prompt right click with your mouse anywhere in the cmd window and select paste. The cmd will append itself to the flashing cursor, then press enter.

You can also use ctrl+ c to copy and ctrl+v to paste (keyboard)
