I have a Dell desktop computer with Vista installed. I bought it 2/2009. In July 2010, I went to get on the computer, and apparently it restarted for some reason but all I had was a black screen with a flashing cursor. I called Dell and they had me turn off the computer, unplug all external hardware plus the ether net cord. Then I unplugged the power cord from the back and pressed the power button for 10 seconds. Then I plugged the cord back in, powered it up, and it worked. The only problem is that every time it reboots, that is exactly what I have to do. Is there any way to fix this permanently???

holding the button down with no power is to discharge the energy on the main board and power supply, don't think it does anything else, is your system well grounded? if so then it could be a hardware problem, but Dell techs would know best

If you are brave and want to take a shot in the dark you could try a factory reset. On startup screen with the Dell logo , hold down Ctrl key, and at the same time tap F11 over and over. If you are quick then next screen will be a blue screen which will prompt you and ask if you wish to continue with factory reset. Click yes and continue ...

could be the capacitor in the power supply is not cycling properly, if you get nothing, not even power supply fan, until you degauss by unplugging and holding down the button, i'd call Dell back :)
