Adding an SSD to your computer, replacing a failing hard drive, backing up your OS, or upgrading to a newer machine? Then you need a program like Paragon Drive Copy 15 Professional.

You can try the free trial of Drive Copy by clicking on the Download Drive Copy button in the red rectangle. This will give you a feel of what the program has to offer, but you will not be able to physically carry out any of the options on your hard drive.

Once you’ve installed Drive Copy you will see a Windows 8 style screen.

Press the Drive Copy button and the display will change to

Migrate OS to SSD
One of the main reasons that you might want to copy the OS is if you wanted to add an SSD for its speed. Drive Copy offers two methods of copying a partition: Copy Partition and Migrate OS. To make the SSD bootable it will be necessary to use the Migrate OS option. It should be noted that the target disk must have sufficient room for the copy, otherwise you will get an error message. Once Drive Copy has completed the copy it is advisable to check the bootloader options to make sure that you can boot from the SSD and from your original OS. A good, free program to do this is EasyBCD.

Copy a failing disk.
If you suspect that your hard disk is failing, it is a good idea to move the contents to a new disk. The Copy Disk option will copy all partitions from the old disk to the new one, but the partition containing the OS will not boot. To get round this, use the Migrate OS option to copy the partition containing the OS , then copy any other partitions you may have. Unfortunately, the Drive Copy Copy Partition option will erase everything else on the target disk, so a better way would be to use the Copy Hard Disk option then copy the partition containing the OS using another program that would not delete the rest of the disk. There are free programs, such as XXClone, that will perform this function.

Backing up the OS
Although the Migrate OS option will give you a backup of your existing OS, it does not have the facility to make incremental backups, so this is not the easiest way to backup.

Migrate to a new machine
Drive Copy has the option to upgrade to a new machine and will adapt the OS to work with a different hardware setup. However, the procedure is rather complicated and it would be easier to take advantage of having a clean install onto the new machine, then copy any documents etc., onto the new machine using Windows Explorer.

Conclusion
It appears that Migrate OS is the only useful function of Drive Copy. As there are free programs, such as XXClone, that will do this, it seems pointless paying £24.95 ($39.95) for Drive Copy.
