I have windows xp on my laptop. I backup on a usb harddrive (maxtor 80gig) usually with no problem.

I did something new that caused a problem,

I used the files and settings transfer wizerd to backup, and it turned out the the backup was more gigs than i had spare space/ this caused a problem with my usb drive. and to cut a long story short, i went to the web and ran a chkdsk on my usb drive/ this seemed to correct the problem, i can now see the files. but they are empty.

when i try to delete files i get the error "cant read source...."

and when i right click and check how many gigs are being used. it seemslike theright amount to before the problem started, but i cant see the files/ also if i try to format the drive it wont format, i don't mind losing the date there as i have another backup, but i'd like to be able to save it if possible/

seems like i have empty files, it got corrupted somwhere. but the figures say, that the files are there in gigabytes, when i open them, they're empty. so where is the data?

anyonw know how to solve this? or even how i can format the disk and start again? i can't format it, and i cant read the files, so if nothing else, even if i can reformat it,.and remove all that is there, i can use it again from scratch can't i?

i'm not computer literate. just a novice who only knows the bare minimum,

thanks for any advice

With the external drive attached, Right click on My Computer and select Manage . . then Disk Managment.

Does the external drive show? . . can you right click on it and select Format?

simpswr, thanks for the reply

Yes, I can get to "format", but when i click it, nothing happens, no window opens.

Also, the folders are there but they are empty, almost as if the files are invisible,

The data must be somewhere there, because i have 80 gig space and over half is used, but i only see a folder structure now,

i cant even format it

Try this . . Double click on My Computer . . right click on the external drive, select properties . . then click the Tools tab . . Click on Error checking and check both boxes in the next window . .

Let it run the error check

I'd run diagnostics from the manufacturer to rule out drive failure

Maxtor basics portable storage 80 GB is all the info i have

also when i try to download the file it says

"your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded"

so i went to internet , options, security , shifted it to "low" and still get the same message,

duhhhhhhh, this is frustrating.

I can however, see the drive in "windows explorer", it says 74GB , and says about 21gb is empty, and about 51gb used,

There is a folder structure, with folder names on, as i left them, before running chkdsk, but the folders are empty if you click on them, no date there, so where is all the 51 gb data then?

Are you using a firewall program? . . It may be blocking the download. Otherwise, go into Internet options and reset everything to defaults and see if it will download

If any o them have a internet security program ( Norton . . McAfee ) you may have to disable it, establish the connection, then enable it.
