Pending sector "repaired", would like help analyzing smartctl output and chkdsk
Hello people!
I think I resolved my issue (kinda) but I'd like some help from those of you who are more experienced than me, regarding the status of my hard drive.
I'd like to know if I may trust it and continue using it.
I apologize for the lenght of this post
Since it's kind of a long story let me first present the configuration of my system and the source of my problem
I have a Samsung Notebook (NP-RC530-S03IT), bought almost 2 years ago, which uses a 750GB Hard Disk (SAMSUNG HN-M750MBB)
The HD is partitioned to allow a multi-OS boot, the more important and most used partitions/OS are the following two:
the OEM OS is a Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
the other OS, which I NEED to remain flawless because I have all my university stuff there, is an Ubuntu 13.04 installation
The problem started yesterday when Windows 7 remained idle for the whole night ( I went to sleep and forgot to put in on stand-by ),
it was running Google Chrome Portable (located on the Windows 7 partition) with a lot of tabs opened and when the morning after I tried to do anything the System remained frozen
I was able to understand that the problem was in some file in use by Chrome.
Windows Event Viewer reported a bunch of errors of this type:
Event Id: 9
The device, \Device\Ide\iaStor0, did not respond within the timeout period
CrystalDiskInfo reported a warning status:
C5 Current Pending Sector
100 (current) 100 (worst) 0 (threshold)
000000000001 (raw data)
(I'm not completely sure that the value for "current" was 100 since I didn't make a note)
The system would froze again if I tried to launch Chrome or copy the folder in which it was located (I was trying to back up my data and then realized that the problem was there when the copy process froze).
So here's what I did next (and here I would like to ask you if I proceded in the correct way to solve the issue)
I did an analysis with seatools for dos, and even though it reported me 8 bad sectors, the utility said it couldn't try to repair them, since the drive was of another manufacturer ( weren't samsung drives manufactured by seagate??? )
The bad sectors' LBA were the following:
55646408
55646409
55646410
55646411
55646412
55646413
55646414
55646415
using an ubuntu live cd I tried to read those sectors, but couldn't, and as expected the command
returned an error
luckily enough, I was able to repair those sectors using this option
which wrote zeros on those sectors and made them readable once again
Now, CrystalDiskInfo reports a good status, and there are no troubling signs from the SMART values, nor problems copying the files in the folder where Chrome Portable is located
but I would still like your help to analyze the results of
(which I did on the ubuntu live cd after repairing the sectors)
[see first attachment]
in particular, see line 73 of the txt: note how it shows 252 as value for "current"
that's why I'm not so sure that before it was 100
is it a bad sign if it augmented from 100 to 252 ???
I would also like some help with the log from
(which was scheduled on the next reboot before loading windows 7)
I warn you that the log is in Italian, if you prefer I may try to translate it!
[see second attachment]
As i said, I'd like to know if the drive seems ok and if you think that it was some weird software error, rather than a localized hardware failure
I personally find extremely odd that those 8 sectors remained blocked in that way, and that the HD's firmware didn't put in place the usual countermeasures
but since I am completely unexperienced I'd like your opinion
PS: also, would you suggest that I run again a deep analysis of the disk with seatools for dos or some other similar utility?
Thanks for the attention :thumb: and sorry for any english mistake that I may have missed
