I'm thinking of incorporating a network attached storage facility into my home network for domestic use only, nothing mission critical, clips and pictures of family events and occassions therefore of sentimental value.
I'm thinking Raid 1 configuration but I'm unsure whether 'with Parity' is of benefit fo me.
Any hardware suggestions/experiences for NAS units and drives gratefully received with thanks.
Is £200 ish ($300 ish) a reasonable budget ? (as a starting point).
RAID1 is mirroring (duplication) of drives, there is no parity in RAID1. With RAID1 if one drive failed the other drive should be fine however if data corruption or a some other type of file level errors occurred it would be spread to the second drive.
If you're looking for fault tolerance with more than 2 drives, RAID5 should be a starting point.
I would also consider some type of cloud backup or offsite backup for data that couldn't easily be replaced. Theft, flood or fire could destroy your local storage leaving you without your data?
WD My Cloud Ex2 sounds to be a good answer to Your question.
It`s pretty cheap, about $300 for 4TB.
It is very easy to use, great for home use.
I also recommend You to read Amazon customer reviews, You can find a lot of useful information there.
I don't know if this is relevant but...
I am taking the 4x 2Tb HDD's out of my NAS and I am going to put them in my Media Server. I also have cloud services with Google, Hotmail and Apple, so all the important stuff I keep on the cloud as well.
