does it show up in the bios ? Can you hear or feel the drive spinning ? Can you provide a link to your drive in the WD website we can get the detail specs on the drive ?

Hi hishanvarma,

Also, please provide the model number of the external HDD. Your external HDD not being detected doesn't mean the hard-drive is going bad. It's also possible that the external enclosure device is could be not working.

Mpsthonix hijacking another posters thread is considered rude! Please start your own post. Also answer questions that I asked the OP in this thread and tell us if the drive got dropped which it sounds like it did based on symptom

Can be many reasons: bad PCB, corrupted firmware, one of the read/write heads is malfunctioning. It is hard to say without diagnostic.

Unfortunately all those mentioned problems will not be discovered or fixed by Bios or disk manager.

Do tell what will fix his problem.

The questions we are asking is to determine if the computer can even talk to the drive in order to possibly recover needed data with r-studio or some other package. I however the poster is limited on basic computer knowledge as well and he only replies once or so a day

t's a process if you know the solution post it. !

hishanvarma How to access Diskmanager in XP
How to use Disk Management to configure basic disks in Windows XP

I have no idea if you have a laptop or desktop but MOST ALL computers have some KEY that allows ACCESS to the BIOS as the computer boots up. The most common these days is the F2 key other are the Delete Key if I knew more about the computer you are using I could help more.

You can access the Disk Manager by right click on My Computer on your desktop -> select Manage -> select Disk Management.

My System

You can remove the drive from the enclosure and attach it to a USB adapter (the logic board in the enclosure may be bad. You can also run WD's DataLifeguard Diagnostic on the drive to test it.
