Hello,

I have a Maxtor External Hard Drive which is currently only intermittently being recognised by my laptop, but the majority of the time it is stating that "USB Device not Recognized, one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it."
I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the USB to no avail also with the power cable, again no progress, I also tried it on a further computer and it was unable to load successfully.
I have to confess to having no idea that external hard drives were not reliable and as such have really sentimental images on there which I am desperate to get back. I would be willing to pay if I had to, but if it was something that I could perhaps fix I'd be really grateful if someone could help me out.
I'm not a technophobe nor am I a computer genius so if anyone did decide they could help, if they could make their instructions as simple as possible because so far I have been completely bemused by technical computer jargon that I don't entirely understand!!!

Really hope someone can help!

Wendy

If the drive is not recognized by two computers, there is a hardware issue. It could be the hard drive itself or the external enclosure. If it's still under warranty, have it serviced or replaced. Otherwise, you could try removing the drive from the enclosure and connecting it directly to your PC or install it into another external enclosure.
