I'm not great with computers and this is the first time ive joined a forum to solve a problem so please can you help?!(EXCUSE MY LACK OF KNOWLEDGE WITH PC'S)I have a old 80gb internal hard drive that years ago just slowly stopped showing up on my pc.I put it in storage and only now have decided to try and get it working and get whats on there.I purchased a ide cable and power setup to try and get it working externally. It still doesnt show up and the green board on the back gets quite hot.Any ideas appreciated. Thanks
Also, please provide other specs on the computer you are trying to use this hard drive with; such as Make/Model of your computer. For example, HP Pavillion 1405gn. And Make/Model of your hard drive.
Most likely, if you have an old IDE drive, it's at least 7 years old or older, and has most likely failed due to old age and usage as Joe mentions. You can replace that drive with another IDE drive for under $20 on ebay; but it won't run for long, unless you pay more $$ to find a new IDE drive, and they are quite rare and expensive. Like buying NEW car parts for an antique car is what you are trying to do.:ermm: Chances are even if you use that drive or replace it with a new drive, once you get it running it's going to be WAY to slow to do anything effective on the Internet!! Buy a new computer.
If however, you are just using to write your memoirs on in MS Word or play Solitaire on it; then go ahead with the plan you are pursuing.
Usually this story ends with how much does it cost to get my data back, or should I try the freezer trick. You're fortunate in that it sounds like your data was backed up and you would just like to make use of the drive. Without physically being at your location to test it, IMO the combination of heat and declining performance you described = a dead IDE drive.
When you get a chance, please provide and brand/model of your computer HDD. Since it's an IDE hard drive, there would definitely be jumper settings. I agree with the others though that the HDD has failed due to age.
If years ago the HDD stopped showing up on your computer, putting it on a shelf for a few years is probably not going to bring it back.
If the HDD does not show in the Bios or in Disk Management then no software is going to be able to recover the files if the computer can't see it. If the data is critical, the only other alternative is to send it to the very, very expensive Data Recovery specialists. Most people can't afford this option.
It's a new computer which works fine.the hard drive is old and doesn't go in my pc so I purchased an ide data thing that I've plugged into the hard drive and that's linked to the pc via usb
the driver is not even whiring if you know what i mean.so apparently ive got to change the green part on the back but it has to be identical to mine and expensive.are there any other options?
No, the drive is dead and you do not sound as if you have had much experience with that type of repair which could cost you more if you get it wrong.
