This message comes up on black screen on power up. Push enter and it continues on to Windows. Then more errors with system32 were showing up.
I tried formatting and reinstalling Windows XP but hard drive would not format.
Until nothing would start up.
I installed a new hard drive and it started up fine until I inserted the WinXP os disk started format but it froze at 12% for two hours. Restarted and the "problem with hard drive" message showed up again and now Windows will only start in safe mode.

Could there be a problem with something other than the hard drive?

The new hard drive is a WD5000AAKB

Windows xp is the only operating system on this computer

Sounds like a smart error. Download the western digital diagnostics and run those against the disk.

SMART is Self Monitoring and Reporting Technology - designed to give you an indication of impending hard drive failure. Some of the values monitored by SMART are not critical, others are. Depending on which of the SMART parameters are causing the issue, it may be exactly what it is designed to be, a message that allows you to backup your data and replace the drive before it fully fails. The critical smart values are not repairable.
