Hi all.

A similar thread to this has been posted, but my problem is slightly different.

On startup I get the message
Primary Master:<SATA device not found>
Secondary Master:<SATA device not found>
The computer then progresses to the WindowsXP startup screen, then closes down and restarts.

I have checked the Serial ATA cables and connections, reset using the jumpers, and even removed the battery to completely reset to default settings. None of these things worked.

My motherboard is ASUS K8S-MX

Is this a new build or has it worked before? Are these new Sata drives or have they worked in this computer before? Are the drives seen in the Bios? Do you have Sata set as IDE mode? Have you enabled Sata items in the Bios?

It used to work fine.
Then it started having problems bootin up i.e. it would restart itself a few times, then the sata message appeared and it wouldn't start at all

Can you get in to safe mode? If so, do a system restore and see if that helps.

Are the drives seen in the bios?

trying to start in safe mode, the thing hangs at the same stage each time at windows/system32/drivers/gagp30kx.sys.

Both drives show up in BIOS

I origionally had to replace a fan, the new fan runs properly, could this have any bearing on the SATA problem?

When you say replace a fan, which fan did you replace? I doubt in most instances that has anything to do with your problem.
