transferring files via flash drive

Hi,
I am only computer saavy really to do my job as a medical editor and to surf the web. Other than that, not too handy with computer. I want to transfer files from my desktop to my laptop to so I can work from different locations. I bought a flashdrive and inserted it in the USB and then copied the files from my desktop and several from my documents onto the flash drive. I then inserted the flash drive into my laptop USB and downloaded the files to my desktop. Everything seems to be accessable, albeit, a little different format but I am able to use the files. However, when I remove the flash drive then I am not able to access the files on the desktop. Do I have to download the files on the flash drive to the c drive on my laptop and if so, how do I do that?

Just open a window for the flash drive like any other drive (double-click it's corresponding drive-letter in 'My Computer'.

Now right-click the files or folders you want to copy across and choose "Copy".

Now open a local folder (or create a new folder and open it). With the mouse-pointer inside that folder window, right-click and choose "Paste".

Alternatively, instead of using Copy/Paste, open the source window and target window side-by-side, then use "drag-and-drop" from one window to the other.
