Phiplips dvd+-rw dvd8631 will not recognize a blank dvd

I had to restore my system recently (Dell running xp) at first I had a problem with the drive reading cd's that I had written to previously - I would get the Blue Screen of Death showing bad pool header. Another post said to delete Sonic DLA as it was probably a compatability issue. I did this, now it reads thoses cd's fine as well as playing dvd movies - but will not recognize blank dvds correctly. It shows that a blank cd has been inserted - not a dvd. also the program I use to convert my avi files to dvd so we can watch them in dvd format on a regular player; will do the conversion to dvd, but says to "insert a blank writeable disk" to burn it. When I change out the blank dvd, it still says the same thing.
