This is driving me nuts. My pc (WinXP)
won't read a burnt DVD - my computer shows there is nothing on it. I know there is 'cos I can view it and open it and see the files on my laptop.

I have checked the disc - it is undamaged and clean. How come my laptop can open it but my pc won't.

I put another burnt DVD in the drive, and it can open that.

Did you make sure you finalised the disc when burning? Some CD drives may have issues reading non-finalised discs. A movie disc should be finalised by default which would explain why it plays.

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

Yes it's finalised. Why can my laptop open it but my pc won't. It will open other ones I've made.

Thank you for your help. Guess I'll have to buy an external DVD. Do you know how much they cost and what a good one would be, not too expensive. Assume it will plug in via usb

Classic symptoms of a failing drive. Burnable media is the hardest to read and is the first to exhibit problems when the laser ages and weakens.
