[SOLVED] File sharing over 2 routers

Hey guys

Before I moved home I had one netgear router supplied by virgin media. On my home network I had my pc sharing it's printer and also some shared folders I.e. Music folder, my documents etc. Now I've moved I have had a new netgear box supplied by virgin media (which I call virgin media 7) which because of the shape of the building doesn't reach my bed room. To fix this I have had to connect my old netgear box (which I call virgin media 8) to the new one via 10m of CAT5e but now I can't access my shared printer or shared folders on my win xp pc which is connected to virgin media 7 via wireless if my vista laptop is connected to virgin media 8. I have tried looking in the setting for the option that makes it just act as an wireless extention to vm7 but they have removed the menu from the settings. Does anyone have an idea how I could get the setup working again because it's getting very annoying please help.

Re: File sharing over 2 routers

You connect via lan port not wan port so everyone is in the same subnet. That is vm7 lan port to vm8 lan port.
you disable vm8's dhcp server and assign it a static ip in the lan subnet range of vm7 so you can manage it

Thank you for your reply. Just so i'm 100% on how this works, the cat5 cable that runs from vm7 to vm8 i plug into vm8 as if it is a pc and not the socket that the modem was orignally plug into is that correct?

Thank you again

Re: File sharing over 2 routers

socket the modem plugs into = wan port
socket a pc plugs into = lan port

yes you connect lan port to lan port. One of the routers has to support mdi/mdix [most do these days] or you will need to use a crossover cable.
