VOIP (ATA) with seperate Router and Modem.

Hi all.
Newbie here with very little tech now how.

I am having trouble setting up my VOIP at the moment, with my adaptor not seeming to work. I'll run down my hardware for you and any help you can give would be great (expect obvious and important information to be omitted....I just dont know any better )

I have a Naked ADSL connection
D-Link DSL-502T modem
Belkin N Wireless Router
Netcomm ATA V210P

It all works fine without my ATA connected, and even once i connect the ATA the internet can still be accessed via the wireless router. I just can't get the little "SIP" light to come on.
I have been in contact with my ISP support and we have checked all the settings on the products, which are all apparently correct. They went on some incoherent ramble about "port forwarding" which made no sense to me.

SO, what information am I missing before you guys can help me? and how do I find it out?

okay i guess I'll agree with the guys from the ISP , i was sure that VoIP use different ports for send and receive and i did some research for Netcomm and i found it use's both ports (5060 , 60000) and i guess you will need to open them from your router ( port forwarding )
i'll attach a pic from the Manual of the Netcomm (Top of page 23 ) that show the ports needed
and will post the link of the manual since is is larger then the max upload size
and hope that will solve your problem

Actually, you shouldn't have to do any port forwarding for a VoIP adapter. I've used a number of different models and different VoIP carriers. All I've ever done is plug the VoIP box into a port on my router.

Re: VOIP (ATA) with seperate Router and Modem.

I know there probably isnt a universal setting with routers and ports, but are those two ports (5060, 60000) usually ports that need to be forwarded for items such as the ATA to be able to work?

Also, i have it setup now as: internet -> D-Link Modem -> Belkin Router -> Netcomm ATA -> telehphone.

Does that seem right?

Where are the best instructions on how to do "port forwarding"?

Well, again, I don't see the need for port forwarding for a standard VoIP box. I've had at least four different make/model VoIP boxes here, and I've never had to port forward for any of them.

As far as port forwarding, you can access complete guides for many routers at www.portforward.com
