mozilla won't open .zip file

Mac OSX 10.5.8

when i download a .zip file, Firefox tries to open it with Adobe reader.

i have "archive utility" selected as the default application.

when I open the .zip in finder in Finder, it needs no prompting, it knows to use archive utility.

You should be able to set the default application in Firefox by using Tools > Options > Applications.

I don't have an option for "options" under the "tools" option in Firefox.

I have Stuffit set in the Preferences>Applications>Zip Archive

Tools>Options is for the Windows version of Firefox. For the Mac, go to Firefox>Preferences.

Is Do this automatically for files like this from now on disabled? This can happen if the website's server incorrectly specifies the MIME type of the file. It also can happen if the server assigns "Content-Disposition: attachment" to the file.

Doesn't make any sense.

When I download the .zip file, it opens (or tries to) automatically right out of the download file.

I don't have a chance to tell it what application to use.

Another avenue: Firefox-->Preferences-->Advanced-->Downloads >Find .zip and change action.

I don't have an option for "Downloads."

I have General, Network, Update, Encryption.

Nothing about downloads at all.

According to what I see for FF in MAC OS it should look like this:

Then you can edit the actions. You want it to let you decide each time, just like Safari.

Corday, your screenshot is for the Windows version of Firefox. The Mac version doesn't have the Downloads tab.

Options window - Applications panel

The Applications panel allows you to choose how Firefox handles different types of files, such as PDF documents or MP3 audio clips. For each content type Firefox recognizes, you may select an action that Firefox will use to handle that type of content. You can open the file in the Firefox window with a plugin, open the file with an application installed on your computer (or in some cases, with a web application), or you can save the file to your downloads folder.

To change how Firefox handles a file type in the list, click on its name to select it. Open the drop-down menu to select the download action you want Firefox to use:

* Choose an application: To choose a local or web application to handle a type, select the application from the drop-down menu. If you want a local application that is not in the menu to handle the type, select Use other... from the drop-down menu and point Firefox to its location.

* Choose a feature or plugin: If you want a feature or a plugin in Firefox to handle the type, and one is available, select it from the drop-down menu.

* Save on your computer: Some file types can be saved to your computer. Select Save File from the menu for one of these file types to have Firefox save that type of file to the location specified in the General panel of the Options window.


Adding, removing, or editing a download action

The Applications panel has limited functionality for editing. You can change the action for an existing file type but you cannot add or remove file types. Entries are added automatically when you download files and select actions for them. See Adding download actions.

I've done that already, as I said in the original post.

The download still tries to open a zip file with Adobe Reader.

Now, once it's in the download folder, if I click on it, it will open fine.

But after the download finishes it tries to open it with Reader.

start > choose default programs > set associations > find the .zip association and set it to what to run it as D: it worked for me

but i prefer winrar
