I had a virus on my computer and had to format. I saved both program folders for Firefox and Thunderbird thinking after I reinstall them I could just replace the new program folders with the old ones. Wrong!!!
Is There ANYWAY to save my Data? Addressbook, contacts, prefs, extensions, themes, bookmarks etc.

This page should be helpful:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Moving_your_profile_folder

I think I would choose method 3 as described in the page. Rescue the necessary files from your saved folders, and put them into the same location in a new Profile.

A link in the page leads here;

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Migrating_..._a_new_profile

This shows a list of files in the Profiles folder and what they do. You can choose the files you'd like to move from the old Profile (your saved folders) to the new one.

Whenever I reinstall of the OS, I prefer to reinstall extensions and themes rather than transfer them. The only file backed up files used are Bookmarks.html and userChrome.css (in which I have numbers of preferences stored).

Any '.mab' files (Thunderbird address book) are about all that's used from the old Thunderbird Profies folder.

An alternative approach would be to install MozBackup. This should be able to extract the necessary files from the saved folders (just browse to where the folders are stored) and install them into a new Profile. This takes the work out of things but it might still be necessary to reinstall one or two extensions.

This is what i did when i reinstalled Windows???
Go to
  • My Computer, click on "Local C: drive"
  • Tools>Folder Options>View
  • Click on View hidden files and folders
  • Click on Documents and Settings>whatever your username is "etc. John Doe"
  • Click on Application Data
  • You want to save/copy the Thunderbird folder.

After you reinstall windows, go and paste the folder in same place it was before "etc. C:\Documents and Settings\John Doe\Application Data\Thunderbird"
Make sure to copy the folder before you reinstall Thunderbird
