Looking to get better quality on my scans

4K views 4 replies 2 participants last post by  PC person
#1 ·
I have HP C4180 All-in-one (print, scan, copy) Right now I'm trying to scan a yearbook that I never got myself, back when I was in middle school. I want to scan the whole thing and return it to the owner, who has not had it in months. Only thing is, I don't want the quality to be bad as I probably won't (and don't want to) have it again. Here's an email thread with an HP tech support person about my problem.

As you can see, I got somewhat frustrated with him, as he helped me solve 2 other problems, but it appears he doesn't know how to solve this one. In that case he should refer me to someone who knows rather than having me experiment and see if the next thing he tries to have me do will work. He suggests the number for me to call, which I might do. I think it may not be as bad as I thought, that whoever I talk to from HP, I will not have to explain the thread and steps I took from the first email forward.

Keep in mind this thread goes backwards in time, with the most recent email reply being first. I replaces instances of my name with hpcustomer, which shouldn't effect what it says (just for my privacy) I'm wondering if anyone here can help me with this. The viewer seems to be the most important thing, it looks different (same image, better quality) depending on which one. Which makes me think perhaps the scanner/software isn't the culprit, the bad quality is just an illusion created by the software.

Thank you for getting back to us. I am glad to assist you further.

To complete the shipment process you can also contact our US Phone support.

Well, yes it does happen with copying, but it would also depend on the viewer. We've already tried changing the resolution to no effect. One thing we really should focus on (as I've told you) is the viewer, as it does look different depending on which one I use

Honestly, I'm almost ready to give up on this. I don't mean to be rude, and you have helped me solve two problem. But, I've been following your advice for quite a while on and not really gotten anywhere. You tell me to do something. I do it, and it doesn't solve the problem. It sounds like you really don't know either and are having me experiment with thing after thing to see if it works. Someone who really knew how to solve the problem could tell me exactly what it is and how to solve it. I'm sure someone knows what the problem is and how to solve it, but it isn't you. Do you have a supervisor?

It didn't really help. It's using photomart premier which I'm not that familiar with, but it didn't make it really any better. Perhaps it would help if you could see the picture, would you liketo? (and view it with the same program) Like I was saying though, it looksdifferent depending on what viewer I view it with, some it looks better, some worse. Also, is the magnification level- it makes a difference.

I'm just kind of looking to get this solved. I'm borrowing a yearbook from someone that I've had forquitea while now and want to get it scanned and back to her, but I don't want to be left with bad quality images.

Now the software is installed and the problem appears to be fixed. I just hope it stays this way. Somethingelse I'm having a problem with is the image quality. It doesn't look very good at all, no matter which JPEG quality I save it as. But, It DOES look quite different (and better) if I am viewing it in Windows picture and fax viewer, not sure why, just wondering why this is. I want to make sure Idon't scan themas low quality, and then nothing can be done except scan them again. It appears the low quality is a illusion of sorts.

I downloaded the package and double clicked it to install it. I did disconnect the device before doing this. I got to the point where it asks me to turn onthe device and plug it in. I did, but the next button is still greyed out. There is an option asking me if I can't connect it not to do it later, but I can connect it. It's just that the button stays grey.

That patch doesn't apply to what I have. I forgot I have actually tried to install it before and been told it (in a pop up message) that it doesn't applyto me.

I went ahead and did this. I tried scanning consecutive documents indocument viewer. The first time I di dit, I clicked new scan twice and scanned 3 consecutive documents and they all showed up, after a few seconds delay. But,I just did it about 10 minutes ago, tried to scan 2 consecutive documents (clicking new scan and scanning the second one) and the second one did not show up.

Also, I wonder if something can be done about the scan quality of the pictures with my device. They look very bad indeed, at least in HP documentviewer. I noticed it looks somewhat different depending on what viewer I use. HPdocumentviewer and Quicktime they look horrendous in. They look pretty bad in MS paint too. WIth photoshop they look somewhat better. In Windows Picture and fax viewer they look quite well.

it appears to have worked. I can now open documents in documentviewer without a problem. There is still is, however, the issue of scans not appearing on my computer- after I click new scan, scan the document, only the first one I scanned will appear.

I suppose I could just scan eachdocument one by one, not clicking new scan and waiting for it to appear, this might work, but would be slower. I had scanned a 60 page book, and then found out almost none of it appeared on my computer.

I dont do much scanning myself but to sacn in good quality you will need to raise the resolution

With the issue of scans not appearing in the computer have you set it to actually save those scans? and if they are going to a particular place is there enough space to store them?

Is the scanner software installed?

Is the print spooler clear?

What resolution do you use?

The issue of the scans not appearing has been solved actually. Just now is the one with scan quality. I'm still trying to find someone who can tell me why the scan looks different in each viewer, which is why I think it may not be the scanner's fault. That if it were, the picture would not look good in any viewer, regardless of which one.

Here's are two pictures of mine I scanned. The first one is one I scanned with HP document viewer, then saved it again as a 0 quality JPEG to reduce it's file size. Try viewing it in the viewers I did to see if you can see a difference.

The second one is one I told the scanner software to scan at a higher res, 300 instead of 200. Oddly, it makes it look worse! Well, at least with HP document viewer. This one I also resized as a 0 quality jpeg so it would fit here.

Didn't think it would put them in the body of my message, but you can see even here that the one on the right in of less quality than the one on the left, despite being scanned at a higher resolution. I notice though, that the right one is smaller width-wise than the left one, I don't know why I didn't tell it to change the dimensions, just the resolution.
