l had to install a new harddrive in my HP DV6 and ended up with a problem where as I am unable to restart the laptop. it freezes at the hp logo screen which comes at startup. I had to install windows vista as my windows 7 backup failed. Has anybody had or got this problem. I have run tests, ie: unchecked all the tick boxes and rebooted, same problem when rebooting in safe mode. Any help would be welcomed.
Unable to restart hp pavilion dv6. it freezes at the hp logo screen which comes at startup
Most likely it's either a cabling issue with the new hard drive or the hard drive itself. Did you buy the hard drive new or used? And where exactly did you get it from? A store or ebay?
Test the hard drive with the Seatools free hard drive diagnostic program in my signature below. Run BOTH short and long tests. If either test fails, you got a BAD replacement hard drive and you need to return it or replace it with one from a different seller!!
Post back and let us know your results and answers to my questions and we'll advise you further.
I have checked out all the cables and they are fine and working. The drive was purchased new from maplins. Both tests come no errors. The problem only happens when you have to reboot the machine, first thought was that it was to do with the version of windows 7 that came with the HP machine did not like having a generic version of vista installed.
Sure thing, Ron. Glad to help. If Win7 came with the dv6, and it has a COA (Certificate Of Authenticity) Product Key on the bottom of the laptop, then it is NOT possible to downgrade to an earlier version of Windows! This would also be true if you tried to install Windows XP, 2000, or even 98 onto that laptop, the hardware won't work and there are no available drivers to work with your specific components for those earlier versions. This is True in 99% of ALL laptops makes and models FYI.

For goodness sake Bigbearjedi, lets not make blanket statements in such a manner, they have to be wrong. You can install any version of Windows on that laptop now it is true you should first check to make sure there are drivers available for another version of Windows but Windows will mange to put in enough drivers to make a system run and even a generic video driver should at least boot the system though maybe not very well.
Rocketron when you install Vista you remove Windows 7 so Windows 7 isn't saying anything about an install of Vista. It more sounds as if the install is corrupted or not properly done.
That was just to see if anyone was awake out there! well, how about Windows 286, you think that would install? lol. I should have qualified that statement more perhaps, i.e. "...any modern version of Windows". thanks for recognizing the fact the OP should check for Vista drivers first. since if he doesn't then 6 weeks later when he tries to run some app he hasn't used yet like Bluetooth or his Memory Card reader and it doesn't work, he at least won't be surprised. I realize that the computer will work for basic things, but to run a downgraded OS prior to version that HW was designed for is unrealistic to expect 100% of things to work properly. :nonono: I don't recommend those types of OS downgrades to my Customers without a written Waiver or Release of Liability as you would expect. I've gotten fired over that very issue in certain instances. I RARELY do this anymore just because of "blowback" after the fact. If the OP doesn't care, of course he can do whatever he wants with his own computer. I was letting him know of the consequences of doing so. :whistling:
Thanks for jumping in..!

Everything is working except if you have to reboot when it freezes on the HP screen, all drivers are up to date and have no problems. I just wondered if it had something to with the bios not like it being a generic version of windows.
Have you downloaded the Chip set drivers for Vista from the Manufacturer for that model Laptop?
If it only came with Windows 7 chances are they didn't make drivers for an earlier version.
OK well it still could be Oem or retail but for this it really shouldn't matter.
