A Toshiba is offering i7 and 4Gb RAM and a Dell is offering both i3 or i5 with 8Gb RAM. And the graphics card is entry level GT960.
The main tasks will be browser, Skype, ms office etc etc and some multitasking. No heavy gaming. Games like The Sims will be played only occasionally.
The main concerns are - the laptop should run well at least 3-4 years without fail. The last Packard bell failed at charging in two years. My father's Toshiba's failed too. In two months, both the keypad and numberpad went dead. The harddisk gave one bad sector. Don't want those to happen. Saw in a survey that shows Toshiba fell from 4th place to 8th place and Dell rose from 6th place to 2nd place.
All manufacturers have the occasional poor model / PCs and theres noway to guarantee that the PC will last 3-4yrs - hence the warranty is only 1 year
if you want to be certain , you will need to take out the extended warranty options
for that basic, usage an i3 or i5 would be fine, if theres not a lot of difference in price - perhaps the i5 - BUT you need to look the exact model up as some i3 are better than i5s
There's no guarantee that any laptop will last x amount of time without failing. Anything could fail at anytime. I work on laptops from every manufacturer and haven't noticed one being more problematic than another brand. I probably work on more Dell's but I think that's because more of my customers have them.
I've had two HPs that lasted more than 4 years before an upgrade and never had an issue. I have an ACER that is 8 years old and has never had an issue. Family members have Dell and Toshiba and only the Dell has had some issues with the network adapters.
Chose a second hand HP elite book. Has i7, RAM upgraded to 8Gb, 256Gb ssd, no dedicated gpu except the onboard one. It was used only few months. Seemed like a good deal. Had windows 8. Upgradable to 10 I believe.
I have always bought Dells and yes you might invest in an extended warranty. You can always add the warranty later but they are cheaper if you buy them up front. If you are concerned about the Dell model you are about to buy go on to the Dell forum and see if anyone is having any issues with one that you are about to buy.
