Laptop wont start get this message and I don't know what to do


interactive log on process initialization has failed

please consult event log

How do I fix and what is an event log?

Any help would be super

Hello larry_piguet and welcome to TSF,

Your issue is a Windows issue and may be due to viruses. I am going to try and grab one of the Microsoft guys to come over and see if they can help you.

Once we get you up and running, I think you should go through the virus trojan first steps and make sure your system is clear...

Thank you for your reply. I am at work and won't be home until after 1700 11-22-10. I can't even get to any prompts when I power on I get a gray screen with the message. Any help would be great..

At what point in the startup process do you get the message?
(Toshiba Splash screen, Windows Loading bar, logon screen)

First thing to try.

Press F8 immediately after the "Toshiba" POST splashscreen.
This should bring up a list of options.
  • Repair your computer
  • Safe mode
  • Safe mode with networking
  • Safe mode with command prompt
  • Enable boot logging
  • Enable low resolution video (640 × 480)
  • Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)
  • Directory services restore mode
  • Debugging mode
  • Disable automatic restart on system failure
  • Disable Driver Signature Enforcement
  • Start Windows normally

There are two we are interested in at the moment.

The first thing I would like you to try is "Last Known Good Configuration".
This will attempt to start the computer using the last sucessful Driver profile and registry. This may not work in your case, but it is worth a shot.

The second thing to use is the "Repair Your Computer" selection.
Note that this option may not be available to you, but I believe that it is available on Toshiba laptops. This will take you into the Recovery Menu. You want to select "Startup Repair". Startup Repair will automatically scan your install looking for issues that are keeping Windows from loading. The computer may restart during this process.
