Hello, I'm running into a problem with my CD drive and I'm hoping someone can help. It is not reading cd's the correct way. When I insert a cd in order to install a program, it treats it as a blank CD. It will ask if I want to burn a disc, etc. Sometimes it won't even read the disc. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

I just tried what you said, but it didn't work. All it ended up saying is "Media in cd/dvd drive is not readable" This program used to work in the past, so I'm not sure what happened. I did recently have to format the drive, so I don't know if that has something to do with it?

Try booting your computer with a bootable CD/DVD.

It is possible that your drive failed. Booting to it tell us for sure.

I'm sort of a noob here. What exactly is a "bootable cd?"

Do you have a Windows installation CD or DVD?

That is a bootable CD

No, I don't have one of those discs. Is there something else I could use?

You could download an Ubuntu live CD from http://www.ubuntu.com/ and burn it to a disc. That will allow you to boot into the Ubuntu desktop environment. If it will not boot, then you likely have a failed optical drive.

Okay. Thanks. Now if it is a failed optical drive, how should I proceed?

Your choices, starting with the least expensive/easiest.

A. If it is under warranty, RMA it and have it repaired.
B. Purchase an external optical drive.
C. Purchase a replacement internal drive and install it.
D. Take it to a tech and have them install a new drive.
