Re: Gateway Laptop Bios Problems

Hello aliencds and welcome to TSF,

So, you attempted to update the BIOS and it failed?

Could you tell us the method and steps you took to update the BIOS and at what point it failed.

Also tell us what is happening with your laptop now.

Re: Gateway Laptop Bios Problems

thank you gavin I have an Gateway MX3414 which I did a Bios update to. Now the computer turns on and shows the Bios screen but doesn't get past it. I also cannot enter setup. Is there a way to revert back to the Bios.bak file the computer created. How do you revert a bios without being able to boot?? The Bios flash was successful according to winplash. it said restart so i clicked the restart button. I'm trying to find the CMOS battery to maybe reset the settings but I can't even find the CMOS battery or a dissamebly guide online. Any help is greatly appreciated. I feel the Bios is somehow corrupted because it freezes even if i try to enter setup. I have tried swapping and reseating the memory modules, removing and reseating the wireless card, removing and reseating the hard disk drive. All have no effect. Computer could boot before the BIOS update. I read online about removing the Bios chip and putting a new one but I believe this to be beyond my technical skills. this is what it is stuck on i got the bios update from gateway website. ran winphlash and browsed to the . ROM file 710. The Bios flash was a success but now Freezes on this POST screen no matter what. This is my first time a BIOS did harm and I am extrememly upset. Won't make this mistake again.

Re: Gateway Laptop Bios Problems

You will probably have to reset the BIOS... I am not sure it is corrupted, but flashing in Windows is definitely not recommended... There is a possibility that Winflash just didn't clear the old settings, which could cause issues with the updated BIOS...

Your chip is likely soldered on the board and isn't easily swappable. Work on clearing the CMOS.

Re: Gateway Laptop Bios Problems

spoke to wheaty who had the same issue. he said he left the laptop on for hours and eventually it fixed itself. I'm doing the same right now. It's weird that the bios flash was successful and everything it baffles me that this would happen. going to leave it on all night and will report back. im hoping this fixes itself and boots :(

Re: Gateway Laptop Bios Problems

First, try a "hard reset".

Disconnect power.
Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button in for 60 seconds.
Replace the battery and mains power.
Try an boot the computer.
