Laptop with XP pro. Every couple days the sound goes away. I can reinstall the Sigmatel driver and it works for a while. Not sure if I should post this in the laptop forum, the Wndows XP forum or the driver forum.

Hi have you tried reinstalling the chipset then install the sound Drivers & Downloads | Dell United States
have you ever had this installed Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver version 1.0a available for Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows 2000

Never even thought about the chipset. May try that later today. Thanks. For the record, this is an old, high mile laptop.

OK, I reinstalled the chipset and the sound drivers. Now if its all good for 2 weeks I can say its fixed. It seems to just happen at random times and I dont use the Dell as much as I do my other computers.

Strange. I was playing a game (something I never do on this laptop) and suddenly the sound came on. I didnt even notice it wasnt on in the first place. Also, the 3 year old battery died after about 20 minutes even though it showed over an hour remaining when I turned it on. I'll get a new battery next week.

Well it should run fine without the battery but I do wonder if the sound issue could be related to heat and the onboard sound chip possibly a bad solder since it is intermittent

Bad solder sounds possible. I hate to mess with the motherboard. I have a Gateway that needs one, Ive been putting it off. There is one program on the Dell thats sort of expensive or I wouldnt even care. I also never intended to be a computer "mechanic" but lately it seems to be all I do. I have 3 laptops and my friends seem to think I can maintain their computers too. They dont seem to care that I am a computer dummy.

Just had a crazy thought. This laptop is 6 years old. If the little cmos battery is dead and Im running unplugged and the main battery dies, could this be causing these errors and problems I am getting ?

It could cause some issues usually the date goes out of sync and the os can go screwy it is something you should fix regardless

New battery on Monday, sound gone today. Im still thinking about this solder thing. Maybe a HD thing ? Its been going on for a long time, at random times. Last week, old battery, I just reinstalled the chipset driver and the sound came back. I know it makes no sense. Trying to talk myself into installing a HD from another laptop and see what happens to the sound. Its really no big deal just more of a challenge and a learning thing. I use the laptop to tune the ECM in my car and dont need sound for that.
I know, sort of rambling on. Brain driver may be corrupt this morning too.

Installed the hotfix. Restarted and reinstalled the Sigmatel CODEC. Sound is back. I will report back. Will start using the Dell to surf the net just to see what happens.
