I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 notebook that I purchased new from Dell between three and four years ago.
Some time ago, the LCD screen began to occasionally display washed out colors, with the issue becoming more and more frequent. The brightness of the screen did not seem to change.
After a few months of this behavior, the screen suddenly began displaying "negative" colors - black as white, red as green - that kind of thing. If you imagine a film photograph negative, that's a good representation of what the display looks like.
When at my desk, I have the laptop hooked up to an external monitor and run it as a two screen display. The external monitor has no color problems whatsoever. For further information, the laptop uses an NVidia card, not on-board video.
I expect there's some hardware issue here, but I'm not totally familiar with notebook architecture. Googling this problem I have read about inverters, but the symptoms with bad inverters don't seem to quite match up to my own. Can anyone take a guess at what the problem might be?
