The image on my laptop is not steady and it has slowly moved higher over the last few weeks. I have been told it may have something to do with the hinge where the keyboard is connected to the screen, any suggestions please.
Thank you Masterchiefxx17
This is indeed a new problem and I have tried to update the driver and it seems that the latest driver is already installed. The laptop works fine, it is just the picture on the screen that shakes, not all the time but it seems to get more frequent.

Hi Bigbearjedi, thank you for getting back to me. I have not tried to connect an external monitor only because I do not have one so I would not know if the same problem would occur, de lange.

>>>Hi; sure thing. Glad to help you! This is really a vital test, so you have to do this to get it fixed especially if your laptop is outside of the 1 yr. Factory Warranty. Did you buy this Toshiba at a store (Best Buy, Frys, Staples, Currys, etc.?) or online? If you got at a store, say Best Buy, take your laptop in to their service department and they can do the External Monitor test for you--often for free and while you wait. I used to train Technicians at Best Buy and CompUSA (old days). They want your repair business, so if they run a 10 min. test for you for free and say find you have a bad Motherboard, and they give you an estimate for $250; and you decide to have them repair it, they get your repair business!
Worth a quick test. It's best to get in there right at 8AM or 9AM or whatever time your local Store's service department opens up. Also, try to do this on a weekday, as at my Best Buy store, there is a line of people with broken computers waiting outside for the Store doors to open on the weekends, Saturday and Sunday. Every Saturday and Sunday of the year! Doing this at an off time like opening on a weekday, will often make the Techs more agreeable as they are not yet slammed; and usually they WANT to help you out as per their training!
Please post back the result of this external monitor test and we can advise you what to do next.
Hi Bigbearjedi, This is something that I will have a go at, but things are a bit different here in Oz, the retailer where I bought the laptop has gone out of business but I will go and see some other store not far from here and see what they can come up with, I'll keep you posted. de lange.
Thanks Masterchief, I will see the store people on Monday and have a external monitor hooked up to see what will happen, will keep you posted of the results. de lange.
Hi Bigbearjedi, After hooking my laptop on to a external monitor I had a clear steady picture on that monitor, while the picture on my laptop was still shaking, at least it shows that the problem is probably with my monitor or the connection from the keyboard to the monitor? de lange
Thanks Masterchief, it does look like that, but I will probe a bit further, this laptop cost me a fair bit of cash and I would like to get it going rather than dumping it. It is very tempting to go for a new one but that will have to wait a little while as we have been caught with a few unexpected expenses. cheers, de lange.
Hi Joeten, thank you for getting back to me. I have tried moving the screen slowly back and forward without any results. At one stage it was suggested that
the problem may be in the hinging part where the screen is connected to the keyboard, and not having any idea how the connection was made I thought that there may have been a sliding type of contacts. But that is probably wrong, it is more than likely a ribbon type feeding the screen through the hinge. I can not get access to that part, but with the external monitor test we assume that at least the machine is functioning fine, it's just the screen that is playing up. I am using the laptop now, so it is not that she has broken down completely, it is only very annoying when you are staring at a shimmering picture. Cheers, de lange.
Sounds like a faulty LVDS cable as Joe suggested, or it's the LCD panel itself. It's clear that it's very likely the LCD panel assembly. What was the Make/Model of your laptop? I don't think you ever told us.
LCD panel replacements are $50-$150 US or so. ($150-$450 outside US). If you can you can purchase the entire new LCD panel assembly with Inverter/Backlight/LVDS cable and the hinges all in one assembly. This is a little more money; but it's more likely to solve the problem. You will still have to disassemble the case of the laptop to replace that top LCD panel assembly and remove the cable from the Motherboard connector. This could be $100-$300 US; 2-3 times that outside of US; so you are potentiallly looking at a $300-$900 cost for that LCD panel assembly. Did you pay more than $900 for that laptop?? If so, it might be worth it, but only if you spent at least $1800 for it. (any repair costing more than 50% of your purchase price paid or market replacement value is usually a bad idea). :nonono:
By the way, what part of the world are you in again? I'm asking since that will affect your parts costs, and we have other Users who can't get items shipped to their countries due to embargo, remoteness, etc.
You can also pay a Computer Professional to replace your LCD panel, and if they can get the parts or already have them in your country, you could save some money from buying the whole LCD panel assembly as I mentioned. Plus, if you make a mistake taking the laptop apart and reassembling it, you can brick the Motherboard, the hard drive, or the LCD panel and then you will have a very expensive doorstop!
Let us know how it goes. And if you have any more questions.
Hi BBJ, I will update my profile, but for now, I am in Brisbane, Australia and my laptop is a 17 inch Toshiba Satellite laptop. I will see the people at the local store and see what they can come up with, it all sounds like a costly excercise, cheers, de lange.
