I need some DNS search tools

Hey guys,

I need to know if there are are tools out there to Query a DNS server, check all of it's DNS Zones, and search for certain items.

Here's the scenario:
There were several servers that were not demoted properly before being taken down. They have been wreaking havoc on our DNS tables which have been replicating out to our other 40 off-site DNS servers. Our server admin has narrowed it down to just the few servers that have been causing the problems. He wants to see if there is a tool that he can use to put in the name or IP of the particular decommissioned server causing the problems, point it at a DNS server and let it search for any instance of the records in any of the zones.

thanks in advance

Norman

Hello,

If its internal DNS then nslookup would be the simplest command to use. You can use it to change the DNS Server that you are querying etc.

See:
Using NSlookup.exe

"There were several servers that were not demoted properly before being taken down."

This is not just a dns issue. It a corrupt Active Directory metadata.

You need to correct that first. Addressing dns won't fix that and is just a symptom of the bigger issue.

How to remove data in Active Directory after an unsuccessful domain controller demotion
