A yellow triangle with an exclamation point inside it appears on the bottom right-hand side of my screen. Nothing happens when I do a right click or a left click on it.

My computer is lagging behind on all the tasks I try to do on it, taking longer to open up when double-clicked, bring up webpages, etc.

Every 10 seconds, a sound comes through my speakers like a hiccup sound.

My home page is set to "awesomehomepage.com" and sometimes "index.com" or "searchnut.com". These came back after I had tried to change it from them and had rebooted my PC.

Not sure if this is a problem, but when the computer is on and I'm not using it for some time (maybe 20 minutes or so), the computer starts to sound as though it's processing or running something.

It seems that some/all these problems above are associated with the reason why my computer no longer brings up a specific dialog box on a website that I have special access to from my job. I am no longer able to enter into that website anymore since all these things started happening.

I went through all the steps before posting, except for #5, because DSS wouldn't run stating "Autolt Error--Unable to open the script file".
So HijackThis didn't run through DSS, so I don't have the log (unless I was supposed to run HijackThis separatetly since I couldn't get DSS to run).

I do have the log from the Panda scan as inserted below.

Any help will be thoroughly appreciated.

Autolt Error--Unable to open the script file
Norton Internet Security 2005 may be blocking DSS from running. Try disabling any script protection, or exit NIS then try running DSS again. You may need to download DSS again. Be sure to reenable NIS before posting.

If that fails, post a HijackThis log.

Total Physical Memory: 248 MiB (512 MiB recommended).
While Windows XP will run on 256MB of RAM, the recommended minimum is 512MB. Modern applications are more resource hungry. You may want to consider adding some memory when we're done here.

P2P - I see you have P2P software ( LimeWire 4.16.6 ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

References for the risk of these programs are here,
here and here.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall it. You can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode if needed. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once the Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see a message that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Please download HijackThis to your desktop

Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the hijackthis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please post the logs from:

ComboFix (C:\ComboFix.txt)
HijackThis

If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding.

Thanks tetonbob for the quick reply.
I have deleted Limewire and was on my way with following the rest of the instructions, when I encountered a slight problem.
I saved ComboFix to my desktop along with the appropriate file off Microsoft's website so that ComboFix could install the Windows Recovery console. (I didn't have the Windows XP SP2 CD).
When I dragged the icon for that particular file over the ComboFix icon as instructed in the guide, the ComboFix icon kept moving over as I attempted to do so. So I haven't been able to get the Windows Recovery console installed yet (that I know of).
I haven't proceeded with the other steps yet b/c I wasn't sure whether or not to move on with the other instructions.

I'm not really sure I understand this:

Quote:

Are you right clicking the file to drag and drop, or left clicking?

Does ComboFix attempt to run?

The Red X of ComboFix moves on the desktop???

I actually tried both left clicking and then right clicking to drag and drop it over the ComboFix icon(Red X). Still, with either way of clicking on the file to attempt to drag and drop it over the ComboFix icon, it seems that the ComboFix icon just "scoots out of the way" and makes room for the Windows XP file on the desktop, wherever it's placed on the desktop. (I tried moving the ComboFix icon to another location on the desktop to see if that would help but it just keeps doing the same thing.)

Yes, Combofix has attempted to run if I left clicked on it (without trying to drag and drop the Windows XP file on it, though).

Ok, I may understand now....I do believe you're dropping the package next to, instead of directly on ComboFix. I've duplicated what you seem to be describing. Make sure the Recovery Console package completely covers the ComboFix icon before you release the mouse.

If still no joy, please do this:

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Quote:
@"%Userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" "%Userprofile%\desktop\WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Home-BootDisk-ENU.exe"
Save this as run.bat Choose to "Save type as - All Files"
It should look like this:
Double click on run.bat & allow it to run

Follow the prompts

Grin

Thank you tetonbob!!! I followed all the suggestions/instructions you provided and after doing so I noticed that the yellow triangle is gone away and so is the "hiccup noise" that kept coming through my speakers every 10 seconds. Also I'm able to access my job's website again. Plus my computer is back to its regular speed and no longer lagging behind.

The only thing that remains but doesn't seem to be a huge interference is that my home page is still set to "awesomehomepage.com" or "index.com", "searchnut.com" etc.

Here are the two posts from ComboFix and HijackThis:

Good work. This will take a few more posts to clear up completely.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  1. Disconnect from the internet....pull the plug!
  2. Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.

  3. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add or Remove Programs) if they exist:

    MP4 Player

    Here's why:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/star...yer-21448.html

    Quote:
Marked as undesirable due to the fact that it changes your homepage to a custom Google search engine, changes your browser's default search provider, and runs hidden in the background. Terms of use also state that it collects and tracks urls you visit in order to display relevant ads.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  4. Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...rio&pf=desktop
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.awesomehomepage.com/newsl...=thissiterocks
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...rio&pf=desktop
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...rio&pf=desktop

    Close HijackThis now.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  5. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

    Quote:

    File::
    c:\documents and settings\compaq_owner\local settings\temp\admcache
    c:\documents and settings\compaq_owner\local settings\temp\asmfiles.cab
    c:\windows\smdat32a.sys
    c:\windows\smdat32m.sys
    c:\windows\system32\atpartners.dll
    c:\windows\system32\im64.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mi1.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Application Data\rlywc.exe
    C:\MnmP.exe

    Folder::
    c:\program files\altnet
    c:\program files\need2find
    C:\Program Files\MP4 Player
    C:\Program Files\WinUpdater

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{00000EF1-0786-4633-87C6-1AA7A44296DA}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{59879FA4-4790-461c-A1CC-4EC4DE4CA483}]
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "WinUpdater"=-
    "MP4 Player"=-
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce]
    "DELDIR0.EXE"=-
    Save this as CFScript.txt

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

  6. Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  7. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  8. Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled. A reboot should have done this.
  9. Re-establish an internet connection.
  10. Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

tetonbob, Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!

My internet home page is no longer being hijacked every time I open a new browser. I was able to change it back and it remained the same even after I rebooted my computer. I can't thank you enough for all that you helped me to do in restoring my computer back.

As instructed, I am posting the last Hijackthis log file from the System scan as is inserted below. Thanks again!!!

That's good to hear.

Did you run ComboFix, and if so, can you post it's log, now located at C:\ComboFix.txt?

Great, a bit more work to do....

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://edits.mywebsearch.com/toolbar...p=ZNxmk572YYUS
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.exe.imgfarm.com/images/noc...1.0.0.15-3.exe

Close HijackThis now.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button

Please run this online scan to help look for remnants.

First, Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove Kaspersky online scanner if present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one.

Next, establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Good job.
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on the Box that says "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Highlight the following entries if present, then click "Delete"
  • Peer Points Manager
  • When it asks if you are sure, click "Yes"

============================

Locate and delete these adware related files/folders

C:\Downloads\FamilyFeudSetup-dm[1].exe
C:\Downloads\JEOPARDYSetup-dm[1].exe
C:\Program Files\SoftwareRevenue.org

============================

Please use Symantec's guide to remove the Norton Quarantine files.

============================

The other items found by Kaspersky will be addressed by uninstalling ComboFix as instructed below.

Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Go to -> Run -> copy/paste in the following single line command & click OK

combofix /u

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore points.

Now that your system is clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you follow these steps and use the following free programs:
  • Microsoft Windows Update - http://www.windowsupdate.com
Visit regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items

  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
    • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.

Scan here http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer

Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
  • http://www.trillian.cc ? Trillian or http://www.miranda-im.com ? Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

  • http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ - Firefox - Use this alternate browser. While Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

  • http://java.com/en/index.jsp - Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

  • http://www.aumha.org/downloads/erunt-setup.exe - ERUNT - A useful freeware utility for users of Windows 2000/XP. It's made up of two parts - ERUNT & NTREGOPT.

ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
