O9 - Extra button: ShopperReports..Keeps appearing

Hi Analysts,

My primary concern is that the aforementioned entry in Hijackthis continues to appear in my logs even after deletion. I'm not experiencing any particular side effects, but I would very much like to remove it. Also, the panda scan said I had a virus... Please advise. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Re: O9 - Extra button: ShopperReports..Keeps appearing

Hi and thanks for helping me!

Those programs were not on my list of installed programs, and that's probably because I unistalled suspicious junk prior to creating this thread.

The hotbar remover did not find anything.

Re: O9 - Extra button: ShopperReports..Keeps appearing

Hi,

Download Bobbi Flekman's RegSearch from
http://www.xs4all.nl/~fstaal01/downloads/regsearch.zip

Create a folder for RegSearch on the C: drive called C:\RegSearch. You can do this by going to My Computer then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it RegSearch. Extract all the files from the zip archive into that folder.

Open the RegSearch folder and double-click the icon for RegSearch.exe to launch the program.
Copy / Paste the following line into the Search Box:

C5428486-50A0-4a02-9D20-520B59A9F9B2

On the next line type

C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdocvw.dll

On the next line type

ShopperReports

On the next line type

Compare travel rates

then click Ok

After completion Notepad will be opened with all the found instances of the strings. The resulting file is saved in the same location as RegSearch.exe.

Please post results of RegSearch.txt.

Re: O9 - Extra button: ShopperReports..Keeps appearing

Hi,

When you are done with the above instructions, please continue with the following:

I see that you have AVG Antivirus installed already. Please update it to the latest definitions to make it ready for scanning in Safe Mode.

========================================

If you have an "always on" connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Look in here for
more information.

=========================================

Please scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following entries:

O9 - Extra button: ShopperReports - Compare product prices - {C5428486-50A0-4a02-9D20-520B59A9F9B2} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdocvw.dll
O9 - Extra button: ShopperReports - Compare travel rates - {C5428486-50A0-4a02-9D20-520B59A9F9B3} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdocvw.dll

Close all windows/browser and click on "fix checked". Exit HijackThis but stay in Safe Mode.

=========================================

From Safe Mode run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

=========================================

Restart in normal mode.

=========================================

Please post the AVG Anti-Spyware report and a fresh HijackThis log.

Thank you for the follow-up. Unfortunately, I won't be able to reply promptly because I'm at work . If I had to guess, I'd say that my next reply will be in 9 hours. Sorry about that...

I'll post as soon as I can. Have a good one.

Re: O9 - Extra button: ShopperReports..Keeps appearing

Hi,

This entry in your Combofix log made me believe that you had AVG Anti Spyware. It's disabled via MsConfig. However, it may have already been uninstalled and the registry entry remained behind. We can hold off the AVG Anti Spyware scan for now.

Quote:

Yes, indeed.

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove if Kaspersky online scanner is present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one.

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop in txt format.
Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans for no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Or use Firefox with IE-Tab plugin

Re: O9 - Extra button: ShopperReports..Keeps appearing

Hi,

You're welcome, it's my pleasure. The logs look very good.
Have the following entries fixed with HijackThis.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank

If everything else is well, you can go ahead with the following steps.
  • Click Start then Run
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the Combofix and the /

This will uninstall ComboFix. It will also implement some cleanup procedures and reset System Restore to prevent reinfection from old restore points.

Here are some steps to make your surfing more secure in future:

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Keep your antivirus-program up-to-date and do regular scans with it. Please make sure that you have only one active antivirus program on your system.

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site http://office.microsoft.com/officeup....aspx?lc=en-us and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Keep your pestware-scanners up-to-date and do regular scans with them.

To keep your computer free of Spyware, Adware, Hijackers etc., download and install the following free pestware-scanners (if you haven't installed them already):
AdAwareA tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html
Spybot A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html
Windows Defender here

The following free realtime pestscanners prevent a number of malware-variants from entering your computer, in the first place:

SpywareBlaster A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html
SpywareGuard here

If you haven't got one, already, install a firewall and keep it up-to-date. Please make sure that you have only one active firewall on your system.

A firewall will prevent unauthorized contact between your computer and internet. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here:
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=56#56
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html

Test your firewall here to make sure that it's working properly

Install these programs, to make surfing with Internet Explorer safer:

A popup-blocker, e.g. Google Toolbar here: A popup-blocker prevents popup-windows from opening, when you come along a websites that uses them, during internet-surfing. To provide privacy, select disable advanced features when installing.

IE-SPYAD This utility adds a long list of known bad sites to Internet Explorer's Restricted Sites zone. This prevents those sites from executing their malicious programs on your computer. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm

SiteHound by Firetrust introduces the SiteHound Toolbar - the safe way to browse the Internet. With SiteHound, when you browse the Internet, you're shown a warning page every time you go to a site which is a known scam, potentially loads viruses or spyware on to your computer, has questionable content or anything you would not consider reasonable.
This product can be downloaded from here: here:

Install and use an alternative browser to surf on the internet.

Because Internet Explorer is the most-used browser on the planet, most of the hijackers, adware and spyware are made to abuse your computer thru Internet Explorer.
Here are some good alternative browsers:
Mozilla Suite here
Mozilla Firefox here
Opera here
Netscape here
Important: You can not uninstall Internet Explorer.
First of all, it's part of Windows and you'll need it to download and install Windows Updates.
Secondly, There are some sites that are only accessable with Internet Explorer, e.g. most of the Online Malware-scanners.

Ccleaner is a useful utility to clean the temporary files and cookies on a regular basis. Tutorial for CCleaner will explain how to use it. Note: Don't use the Registry (formerly Issues) block as it deals with the registry and can be dangerous.

But above all, keep all your software UP-TO-DATE at all time!!

A colleague of ours has excellent information and tips on the prevention of malware here and more on improving speed/system performance after malware removal here .

If you want to fight back the Malware Writers, please take a look here and read what you can do against it.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Happy Surfing!
