Welcome to TSF.

Before doing anything, MAKE SURE that you can keep your computer on (at least until we get it fixed). This infection requires us to detect and remove it without rebooting or restarting your computer. If you can't keep your computer on today, then I suggest that you don't get the logs yet until you are ready. With that said (when ready):

Please download the following programs required for the removal process:

Kill2Me http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Kill2Me.exe
PV http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/pv.zip
VX2Finder(126) http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/VX2Finder(126).exe
Hoster http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Hoster.exe
CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ or http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Cleanup.exe
KillBox http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe
notify.bat http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/notify.bat

Please follow the steps below:

1. Run Kill2Me.

2. Unzip the pv.zip files contents to your Desktop (NOTE: It MUST be on your Desktop!).
a) Open that folder on your Desktop and double click on the runme.bat file.
b) Type in 3 and hit your Enter key. Save the log file.
c) Type in 5 and hit your Enter key. Save the log file.
d) Remember to copy and paste both of these log files in the forum AFTER you are finished with the rest of the steps below.

3. Run notify.bat and it should open up a notify.txt Notepad file. Copy and paste this in the forum later.

4. Run VX2Finder(126) and click on the Find VX2.BetterInternet button. Click Make Log and post this in the fourm later.

If you must restart/reboot your computer, you will have to basically start all over again (starting from Step 2 above with PV). The detection and removal process must be done at the same time without the PC being rebooted.

We also need a list of files in the following folders:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\ - there might be a download folder here. We are looking for any randomly named files. Post anything that looks suspicious.

For the PV logs, choose options 3 and 5 (not 2 and 5). I want you to run a virus scan (see below) first to make sure it's not a virus causing problems here.

Sorry about that. Get your version of VX2Finder at:
http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/VX2Finder.exe

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro. Make sure to select the Autoclean option. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\OOBE\BLANK.HTM
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\OOBE\BLANK.HTM
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch

Restart and post a new HijackThis log file along with the other logs (see my first post) if you can post them.

I found out the problem.

We will need to take on another approach. Before we do, I just noticed that your O1 entries are now gone. Do you still have problems now?

Go to C:\WINDOWS and open up the HOSTS file (with no extensions) in Notepad. Post the whole thing here.

Download the following:

http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/DllCompare.exe
http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/VX2Finder.exe

VX2Finder - Make Log and post it here
DllCompare - Run Locate.com and then click on Compare button. Make a log... and post here.

Jono:

What is your D: drive? Another partition or drive and what is on it? (any OS)

Lets try some tools first. I want you run the following....

ClearSearch Uninstaller...http://www.hijackthislogs.com/dl/ClrSchUninstall.exe
Look2 Me uninstaller... http://www.look2me.com/cgi-bin/UnInstaller
IGN Keyword Uninstaller... http://www.igetnet.com/downloads/NLNuninstall.exe
VX2Finder(126)..... http://www.hijackthislogs.com/dl/VX2Finder(126).exe

Move the PV folder to the root drive.... C:\ and then run the run.bat file.

3. Copy and paste the text below inside the quote box to notepad.
Save it to your desktop as type "all files" and name it notify.bat. (Don't use the one you downloaded)

Quote:
regedit /e notify.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify"
notify.txt
Then doublclick to run it. It will generate a text file named notify.txt. Copy and paste the contents into your next reply.

If both those logs fail to generate..proceed below.

Download PRCView...http://www.xmlsp.com/pview/prcview.htm

Unzip all files into a folder on your C:\ drive.
CLick the PRCView.exe and it will load the processes.
Open up your clipboard viewer

Locate the RUNDLL32.EXE process.

Highlight...right click and select modules and another box will pop up
Click the created tab..and the DLLS will be listed by date.
Find the newest ones...highlight...right click and select "Copy Modules Path" and it will copy it to the clipboard.

Paste what you find into your next post. Your looking for several random named DLLS created around the same date.

the notify.bat did't work either:
C:\pv>regedit /e notify.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Cu
rrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify"
Cannot execute C:\WINDOWS\REGEDIT.EXE

C:\pv>notify.txt
Bad command or file name

PRCView:
there wasnt a RUNDLL32.EXE

Ok....Please post another hijackthis log. Can you also navigate to your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ folder. Sort the files by date. Look for the newest random named DLLs and EXE's and post them here. We are looking for files like these examples below which were created around the same time your problem began...

yriodfs.dll
oe734j4jd7.dll
nd83n3yd76.exe
kwuueb.exe...............ect
