It sounds like a BSOD is occuring. When the Compaq logo disappears, immediately tap F8 and Select Disable automatic restart on system failure. Then, reboot, and post the entire BSOD message you see.
Additionally, when you get to that boot menu, you can select Safe mode or Safe mode with networking and see if you successfully boot up with either of those options. If you can, note that in your next post.
