I used Partition magic to install win2k server on laptop for training. After installing I was only able to boot into server and not XP. I removed server and now cannot boot into XP. the following is error message I receive:

"xmnt2002 not found skipping autocheck"
"autochk not found skipping autocheck"

I have contacted Symantec and they were not helpfull at all. Said to contact manufacturer and HP wants me to pay even though still under warranty. Says 3rd party software since win2k server was not part of original setup and waranty does not cover.
I have tried to use chkdsk /r and still cannot get in,
Any suggestions?

This is one of the reasons I do not like Partition Magic.
Quote:
Use regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\BootExecute

It's a REG_MULTI_SZ (i.e) Binary value.

It should contain only: Autocheck Autochk *

Right click the Value BootExecute, Modify and make it read only and exactly: Autocheck Autochk *

Exit regedit and reboot to test.
Note there is no space betwee Contro and the l. This editor insists on corupting listings.

in win2k regedit all but bootexecute was available. I am only able to get win2k server to boot. I am able to see xp now and I am making back ups of all my files and going to wipe system. I will use another comp to train with server instead of dual boot on my laptop.

You tried Safe Mode?
You tried a Unix recovery CD, such as Knoppix or Bart's PE?

If you are really trying to learn things then this is a good case of disaster recovery for you to practice on.

I reinstalled win2k and went into disk management and saw that there was no drive letter assigned to xp. I assigned drive letter and was able to recover all my info. I then updated win2k with all drivers and put on network and transfered all my files. I then decided to train on win2k on an older computer as a stand alone and formatted HDD and reinstalled xp and going to be done with it.
Thx for the replies and will use this as a learning exp.
