I have a Levono Laptop running Windows XP Profressional that is connected through a LinkSys Router. I decided to remove Norton which only partiially uninstalled. Went to control panel and deleted any other Norton showing in Add and Room and then restarted the computer.
Now I can see that I am connected wirelessly through the LinkSys Router and that I have great connectivity but I can't open up Internet Explorer.
If I go into Safe Mode with Networking, I am able to get online and go right to Internet Explorer.
What do I need to do to fix the computer so I don't have to use Safe Mode to get IE to open.
I hope someone can tell me what I need to do. I am guessing it has to do with flushing the IPConfig but I don't remember how I've done it in the past.
well I don't think flushing the dns cache will help with you problem. But you can do that by opening up command prompt and typing in ipconfig /flushdns and after you do that I will register the dns by typing ipconfig/registerdns. What I would try to do is a system file checker. That can be done by going to start >> run and typing sfc /scannow after doing that reboot and give her a shot.
*note* You may need you windows xp pro disc to run the system file checker.
OS running on all affected systems Make & models of all equipment (routers, network cards, modems).
Wired or wireless?
What wireless encryption is in use? (WPA, WPA2, WEP, None)
Browsers being used (Firefox, IE, Safari, Opera,...)
What security software is installed? (Firewalls, AV, Spyware, Malware,...)
Open up a command prompt (Start > run > cmd)
Type the following bolded commands and post the results for each affected machine.
Note: To post results of commands, alternate click on the top of the command prompt > edit > select all >
alternate click on the top of the command prompt > edit > copy > paste in a message here. If you are on
a computer that can't connect to the internet then paste the contents in a text document and save it to a
portable media like a flash drive, then use an internet capable machine to post the contents.
Thanks for your replies. I am helping a friend with his computer and not at his house (will be there in the morning!) Let me tell you what I remember of his situation.
I did not run the Norton removal tool as I followed the help directions which instructed me to just go through add/remove programs. I did as my friend just didn't want Norton on his computer. It got 80% through the uninstall and would not go any further. I waited and waited and since nothing was happening closed out of the uninstall. Went back to add and remove programs and uninstalled anything else I could find that had Norton on it.
I also went into Safe Mode and went to common folders and even program files and looked for Norton. I believe since most was already uninstalled that there would be little left in the folders. I was corrected and I eliminated what showed as being left.
I think what is happening is that the Norton Firewall was not totally uninstalled and that it is interfearing with IE7 opening.
As I mentioned, I can go to Safe Mode and get on line with IE7. Firefox won't work in Safe Mode either.
My friend has a wireless system, LinkSys, that is running the Lenovo laptop. He is using a cable modem (Charter Cable.) Connectivity does not seem to be a problem either in Safe Mode or when he is back on his regular desktop.
Will it help to download the Norton Uninstaller and use it to complete the uninstallation of Norton (including the firewall). I believe he is using Norton 2006 or 2007. I will know in the morning.
Most of Norton is gone. I just need to know what to do so I can clean the remainder and hopefully gain access to the internet without going into Safe Mode.
Use the tool to remove anything left of Norton. Also, you can do this.
Start > control panel > network connections > alternate click on the network connection > properties > under "this connection uses the following items" make sure there is no Norton entry. If there is then uninstall it.
I think I mentioned he is running Windows XP Professional on his laptop. He is planning on adding another work station wirelessly that will be running Windows Vista Home Edition. Right now it has not been added to the network.
He also asked if I would download and install AVG 8.5 which I did. I installed it as I knew that Norton had been for the most part deleted from the system. Hope this information helps.
