Running Microsoft Outlook with a Windows XP Home Edition, version 2002 service pack 3 on a Dell Dimension 8200.

Since yesterday, all of a sudden when I start Outlook the window opens up, showing the list of emails I have in the inbox, bolded for unread, and shows all the files; no problem there.

At this point, the preview pane then remains blank, and stays this way for about 45 seconds to a minute.

Next I get an error message that Microsoft Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I can still access my emails from the comcast website, but I'll be filling up my memory quota pretty soon!

Have tried rebooting, no change; any helps appreciated!

There are several reasons why this maybe happening. Try some of these to see if they help at all.
  • Are your Windows Updates current? especially for the version of Outlook you are running
  • Are you running WinFax? WinFax (also known as WinFax PRO) is a Windows-based software product designed to let computers equipped with fax-modems to communicate directly. If you are this link may help
  • Are you running Office 2003
  • From XP theme change to Classic style if you are not already running it.
Right Click any free spot on your desktop > Properties > choose Classic theme
Worth reading this link which may assist you if you are running any of the above. From here

You may like to research most of the above then reply with your versions of Outlook and theme currently installed.

kind regards,

My updates are current
Not running winfax, but I followed the link and found a fax program, it is now set to manual
running Office 2000 premium
I run the classic theme
Computer is a Dell

rebooted and still get the same error; when I send an error report, it says "AppName: outlook.exe, AppVer: 9.0.0.2416, ModName: unknown, ModVer 0.0.0.0, Offset: 0007f802

When I hit the link to view technical information about the error report, it says

Have a look through this link to see if it helps you.

There are several resolutions here that may help also if the install or repair fails to assist.

Please access and report any errors in Event Viewer happening at the time you are receiving these errors.
  • Start
  • Settings
  • Control Panel
  • Administrative tools
  • Double click on Applications, then Systems right pane for red X
Then again double click on any error to report back here by clicking under the down arrow then paste in your next reply.

We will nail this I hope, just takes time.

kind regards,

I tried the Office repair; office does not recognize my disk. I can see it uner Windows Explorer, see all the files, but the repair program keeps asking me to install it, I click 'ok', and the it just continues to ask me to install the disk.

Under 'administrative tools' in the control panel, I don't have an 'applications' link...just the following links:

component services
computer management
data sources (ODBC)
Event Viewer
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Configuration
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Wizards
Performance
Server Extensions Administrator
Services

What now?

Event Viewer is showing in your quote above, click on it or click on Component Services, you should see Event Viewer there ....I am running the same OS as you are so yours is obviously configured differently to mine...

You would need to validate your Microsoft Office 2000 premium installation here - curious that at this stage your CD is not accepted.

OS: XP, Vista, Seven, & a whole host you would never have heard of.

Hi, you do have quite a number of event viewer errors, most, fortunately are benign and you could safely ignore them, though they are indicative of a "tired system" me I would probably look to a repair install (over the top no data lost and only updates need refreshing).

If you wish to stay with it (outlook problem) then I would register the most likely problem DLL.

Code:
Open a Command Prompt and at the prompt type:-

regsvr32 Ole32.Dll

press enter and you should receive a confirmation Reboot to take effect.
Tallin has a post for the repair install see here :-

Ran the dll above; all I get is a window that says 'DllRegisterServer in Ole32.Dll succeeded,' and an 'OK' button.

I hit the OK, and that's it....no reboot option. I reboot myself, and still have the same issue with outlook.

Also, noticed something interesting in the link above.....

WARNING: If you have installed SP3, this makes your original WinXP Setup CD useless

This is why it won't read my original CD? Can I uninstall the SP3, or am I permanently stuck?

You didn't really answer my question; is the service pack 3 stopping me from running off the office 2000 cd? Have you ever heard of that happening, or is the slipstreaming just a shot in the dark?

Steady up a little, we are all volunteers here and doing our best to assist you.

I did not know the reply to your first question in bold but a short google told me.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326585

I run the same OS as you do, I used one of the links I gave you to slipstream my original SP/2 CD to include SP/3 so I could do sfc /scannow scans and other items I needed to do with my OS. No, it is not a 'shot in the dark', you have upgraded to SP/3 so it is my advice to make a new OS CD with SP/3 on it.

I do not advise rolling back to uninstall SP/3.

kind regards,

Didn't meam to sound p*ssed; just frustrating.....I appreciate all of your help.

Had a thought; rather than going through the slipstream, would it just be easier to uninstall Office, and then reinstall it?

I wouldn't lose any of my old archived emails or files, right?

Yes, you can reinstall Office, but you still need to have on hand your OS CD having slipstreamed SP3 included on it...

Your choice, both will work well, but the second is a must in my opinion.

kind regards,
