Question

I installed windows XP Pro on my dell dimension 2400. It has an authentic key sticker on the box. However when I installed windows (and formatted) it didn't ask me for a cd key. I have a legit key. I don't want to get in any trouble particularly as this is a business machine.

Is this normal?

I reinstalled windows on my dad's dell laptop a while ago as well as on the family desktop (also a dell) and neither of them required the input of the key, if I remember correctly.

Just go ahead and try activating the installation and, if there are any problems, you can call up Microsoft and explain the situation. If there aren't any problems, then you have nothing to worry about.

When using the factory restore CDs this is pretty standard. If you are concerned it may not be legitimate you can always validate it with Microsoft

Agreed, Recovery CDs for Factory Restore to it's original settings does not require an Activation Key.
