Windows XP home - possibly dodgy copy

A friend has asked if I can look at his laptop that he has bought second hand.

Basically, the guy who he got it off has now been sacked from his job so my friend has asked for my advise.

It's a Samsung laptop (only a 650mhz but can do basic stuff) and he paid £20 for it. It has a crack on the screen mounting (but not the actual screen).

I know Windows XP home can cost about £60 just for the software so I can't imagine it being legit. Anyway, the unit is now asking to register the operating system.

Only option is to attempt to register it using the microsoft telephone registration BUT I'll use a new sim card on my mobile just in case it can track telephone numbers.

Any advise and I would be grateful.

Well, I decided to bite the bullet and ring up Microsoft and register the product. I did this with a brand new SIM card which had no link to myself what-so-ever just to be sure.

And it turned out to to be legal.

So, the friend has got a bargain of a laptop (admitedly, an old one)

many thanks
