Hi. Lately my pc has been shutting down whenever i use the disk clean up. I right click on 'properties' of the hard drive and click on disk clean up. It has the little pop up where it says 'Scanning compress old files' and then it just shuts down. I have a windows xp. Virus scan, Norton, shows the system is fine and ad aware does'nt really find anything serious.
Any help is appreciated.

Hi drkknght !

I wouldn't use the compress old files feature of disk cleanup cause it may lower the performances of the computer (I use all features of it but that one). But it's yours to know whether you want more free space or faster starting apps.

Now what drive are you cleaning when it happens ? c: system drive I suppose ? Go to start => run and type chkdsk c: /F /R. Answer no if it asks to unmount the drive, then yes to schedule the scan at next restart.

thanks for your reply justpassingby i did what you asked me and it didnt work. Windows checked for errors on the disk and everything scanned fine. When i tried to run disk cleanup the computer shut down again. I am talking about the c: drive and i would rather have free space than faster starting apps.
Any other solutions?

Right-click my computer => properties => hardware => device manager. In the view menu check "show hidden devices" and tell us whether there's any device with a yellow warning sign.

Still in the system properties go to advanced => settings under startup and recovery and uncheck automatically restart. This should normally give you a BSOD (blue screen of death) before the computer reboots. Tell us about the error you'll see there.

Go to start => run and type eventvwr.msc /s. This will bring you to the event viewer. Check in the different sections whether there's any warning or error and report whatever you find there.

Could you also provide us with your complete system specs ? See the link in my sig. If this is a laptop, brand and model will suffice.

I didnt find any devices with a yellow warning signs.
I have unchecked the automatically restart. It did not give a BSOD i guess it will when i reboot my computer.

Both your hard drives are nearly full. This may be unrelated to your problem but Windows will prefer to have at least 2GB free on the system drive (it's often recommended to leave 10% free, which would be 7.5GB in your case) to work properly. Try to move or burn some media files on another drive or to CD's/DVD's to make free room.

For the errors and warnings in the event viewer, tell us about the sources and the event ID #. It's likely that the same error or warning appears there several times, just tell us the number of occurrences (roughly, more than ten being a lot) and paste the text you see under description when you double click the event.

I will get back to you about making some space in my hard drive. I worked the disk cleanup utility a couple of days ago and it worked fine but when i tried it yesterday it shut down again.
Should i go back and check "automatically restart" under the advanced options of system properties?

The disk warnings (error during a paging operation) may be related to your drive being nearly full and/or too fragmented. You probably won't be able to defragment it before you have made some free room so do the following :

1. Move some uneeded files away to make room on both your drives, preferably more than 5GB, but at the very least 2GB.

2. Run chkdsk : start => run => chkdsk c: /F /R (provided c is the volume letter of that drive). Answer no if it asks to unmount the drive then yes to schedule the scan at next startup and reboot the computer. Do the same on the second drive.

3. Defragment both your drives : start => all programs => accessories => system tools => disk defragmenter. Be warned that depending on the fragmentation factor of your drives this may very well take several hours. Refrain from using the computer during the defragmenting process.

Tell us how that went and whether chkdsk reported errors on your drives.

Which of the other errors are recent in the event viewer (check the dates) ? Does MS installer start on its own and ask you to install office or whatever at some times ?
