and this is the notepad outcome:

To check for memory and SPs, rgt click on the My Computer icon, choose 'Properties' and they'll be there on the first page.

Gateway's often came with 'restore' CD's. Do you have that, or do you have a WinXP disk?

In any case, insert the CD you have, click on 'Start' 'Run' and type in SFC /Scannow
If the scan finds that it needs something, it'll ask for your install disk. If it's the wrong disk, it'll tell you that. If you have restore disks (instead of the XP disk), and needed files are not accessible from that, then you'll need to wait for a tech with more Gateway experience then me to do a restore...if Gateway 'restore' has a way that doesn't blow away your files and folders, I don't recall.
