Hi,

I am new to both symantec antivirus and these forums.

I recently had symantec antivirus installed on my home computer by one of the IT professionals at my place of employement.

Everything appears to be working fine but once in a while I get something like the following message at Shutdown:

Rtvscan.exe - Application Error - The Instruction at "0x77600f57" referenced memory at "0x69584d3c". The memory could not be "read".

Of course I just ignore it and the shutdown completes successfully.

But I am always concerned when I get error messages.

Can someone explain the message I am getting, and possibly what to do about it?

Thanks in advance for your support.

Hi dubinm, and welcome to TSF.

I would use the term "IT Professional" somewhat loosely. :sigh:

For your information, please read This

You have two choices. Either take the advice from that link.

Or, the so called "solution" to your problem is Here

Question was this version of Symantec antivirus purchased as a legal version or a copy from this IT professional?

I have this versoin installed on my computer by my IT profesional friend. I was given a new computer and did not want to bother him with it. The "new" computer has Norton 2004 on it which is a pain and will end in a couple of months anyway. The version 10.1.5.5000 my IT friend installed does not end. Can I copy this on my flash drive and install this on my new computer or do I need him to do it using his sign in and pass word?

Welcome to TSF....

We sems to have two people posting here so to both dubinm and tiggy if either of you had this norton anti-virus installed by any IT professional I would suggest since they are Professional to actually bother them with this. It sounds like since either of you did not purchase this software that makes it illegal software and the rules here at TSF make it difficult to help:

ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES
Users may not post hacks, cracks, or give instruction how to pirate any type of software, or anything similar, in any forum of TSF. We do not condone, support or give instruction on any illegal activity pertaining to computer systems, computer hardware, computer software programs or computer related activities. Included in this group of activities are requests for help to circumvent system admin passwords or Administrator settings on networks. We do understand that the majority of requests may be legitimate, but we do not have the means to discern these from non-legitimate requests.

I would suggest that any software installed by an IT Dept should be referred back to them where there are issues. Most corporate users have systems locked down anyway, so that individual users are unable to install/uninstall/troubleshoot.

@tiggy - it does sound like an unauthorised installation and, as ThorXP has clearly stated, we cannot help.

"Most corporate users have systems locked down anyway, so that individual users are unable to install/uninstall/troubleshoot."

I understood this and now I understand as it is not "legal" on this site you cannot provide advice as it pertains to this issue. I apologize. Of course the "Prof.." I know knows all of this but I did not want to ask him yet one more favor. I bought licences for 5 computers for a couple of programs years ago myself but i did not remember much about it. I guess I'll keep the Norton 2004 until it expires.

With all this in mind and the fact that I have no money does anyone suggest any of the free online AV programs?

If this is another stupid question sorry. I saw this post http://www.techsupportforum.com/f174/pc-safety-and-security-what-do-i-need-115548.html and went to the http://www.av-comparatives.org/ following link http://www.virusbtn.com/news/2008/09_02 but it is above my head.

Thank you. Some others here made me appear like a criminal!

I had symantec antivirus 10.1.5.5000 installed on my computer at the time of purchase but was not using it. The reason was that I got a free CA Security Suite from my internet provider and this included AV.

But as time went on, I found this CA AV slowing down my computer drastically. That is why I uninstalled the CA AV and activated the Symantec.

My only concern was the intermittent rtvscan error upon shutdown. I do not like seeing errors and just wondered what can be done about it. But from reading the responses here, I guess nothing can and I will just have to live with it. This does not happen that often.

By the way, the same tech person who setup my computer advised against Avast. So I will stick with Symantec. It appears to working fine, does not slow down my computer, and I have yet to have any virus problems.
