I recently did a repair reinstall on my computer to reinstall some drivers that were currupted one of which was my sound driver. After the repair reinstall though, everything started working again except the sound driver.
It looks like it registered with the OS and everything:
But it still shows in the audio device properties that theres nothing installed:
My OS is windows XP SP3 Home. Thanks for the help.
You may also need to install the "Chipset Driver" before the on-board sound controller will function properly. You can download the chipset driver from your PC manufacturer's website.
as PiP suggested, if you have a name brand computer (HP, Dell etc) go to the manufacturers Support/Download Drivers site and type in your service tag # or Make and Model #. And download the Chipset Driver and the RealTek Audio driver for your make and model.
Alright i found the page for my drivers. i downloaded the "Fall 2004 Original Chipset Driver Collection", "Fall 2004 Original Audio Driver Collection", and the "Realtek AC'97 Audio Driver Update". i installed all 3 and followed the directions for the driver installation. still got nothing .
but for the chipset driver, i couldn't find the “Other Devices” section it was talking about in the directions. heres what the instructions say in detail:
1. Download the driver package.
2. Double-click on the icon for the driver package downloaded in step 1, and then click NEXT.
3. Accept the terms in the HP license agreement, and then click NEXT.
4. Click OK to continue. The original drivers are now stored in the C:\HP\Drivers\Chipset folder.
5. If Device Manager does not start automatically, use the following steps. Otherwise go to step 6:
a. Click Start.
b. Right-click My Computer, and then select Properties.
c. Click the Hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button.
6. Click the + (plus) sign next to “Other Devices”.
7. Right-click on "SM Bus Controller" or the device you want to update, and then select Update Driver.
8. Click NEXT to install the software automatically
9. Click FINISHED to complete the installation.
The "Other Devices" would be an unrecognized device in your Device Manager. But all of your devices are recognized and installed. Right click the RealTek AC97 Audio Device and choose Uninstall. Now right click any device and choose Scan For Hardware Changes. You should get a new hardware wizard. If it gives you a choice, choose the latest driver you just installed. If it still does not give you an audio device, right click the RealTek device in Device Manager and choose Update Driver/ Install From List/ Don't Search, I'll choose a driver . It should give you more then one driver, choose the latest one.
