[SOLVED] XP & Rewriteable Discs

My XP Home SP-2 will not format or write to *-RW or DVD-RAM discs.

It purports to be able to format a *-RW (format f: /fs:fat32) but exits with error' Cannot format. This disc is write-protected' with a brand new good quality blank disc.

It can however read rewriteable discs, even those formatted and written in Windows 7/64.

Reinstall needed? It isn't a hardware problem as far as I can determine.

Re: XP & Rewriteable Discs

Don't use the Windows version of Format, use a program like CD Burner XP New discs out of the package do not need to be Formatted. Other then that go to Disc/Erase Disc.
I no longer use CDBurnerXP. It was prone to pretend to write directories which were never in fact written (its multisession function is rubbish).

I use the paid version of Ashampoo, but it does not have a format function, only an erase function. Erase starts OK but crashes with an 'Erase was not completed' error and the disc untouched, so I'm back to square one.

"New discs out of the package do not need to be Formatted."

Surely not? A blank rewriteable in a drive in both XP and Windows 7 will return an 'Incorrect function' error.

Re: XP & Rewriteable Discs

When you first get a rewritable disk, the first time around you can prepare what you want to write onto the disk, and then burn it all in one go. No formatting needed. Personally, I don't bother with the whole multi-session thing. Then when you want to use it for something else, just erase the RW disk, and use it like new again.

Whatever program you use, just ask it to erase the RWable disk. This should be a quick and easy function to perform.

That is the alternative system built into XP, but it's probably more cumbersome that multisession. At least a multisession disc can be read on any computer after being closed. In my experience in fact they can usually be read on different computers without even having to be closed.

The solution in the end: installed Nero's free InCD v6, against my better judgement, and it all now works; formatting in XP, reading and writing the same discs in XP and Windows 7.

Thanks to all who responded.
