Hi, I am new here and not very good on computers.
I have a medion (Dell) desktop pc that is a few years old and am using xp with service pack 3 and AVG anti virus.
I have recently been trying to add updates but a box keeps appearing that says "Windows cannot find 'msconfig'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click search".
I have been looking on different forums and tried different fixes but nothing worked.
Last night a message came up saying something like I needed to verify that my windows was genuine. I contacted microsoft and had to enter 7 sets of numbers with 6 figures in each one.
Since then when I type msconfig or msconfig.exe in the run box a System Configuration Utility Box appears. In the box there are 3 startup selection options :-
1. Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services
2. Diagnostic Startup - load basic devices and services only
3. Selective Startup.
Firstly is it possible to get rid this and secondly how can I get msconfig into the registry?.

I went to start - search. and typed in msconfig and it found the following 4 so I presume it is still in my PC but how do I move it and which one do i move?

1. C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackU 155KB Application 14/04/2008

2. C:\WINDOWS\Help 17KB Compiled HTML Help.31/03/2003

3. C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\ 166KB Application 14/04/2008

4. C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr 166KB Application 14/04/2008

The first two are in blue and the other two are just black if that means anything?

I went to start - search again and typed in msconfig.exe and it only found the above 3 all dated 14/04/2008
Went to run box again and typed in regedit and that opened OK and.the registry editor box came up.
Any help will be much appreciated.

That is what is supposed to happen when you run msconfig . . you should have tabs along the top that include Services and Startup

What do you mean "into the registry"

What are you wanting to use msconfig for?

Hi Rich, Yes there are tabs along the top that include Services and Startup so i now understand that this is OK Thanks.

I have been trying to install IE7 and that is when the message appears and am unable to go any further with the installation so that is why I need the msconfig. I have also had problems with microsoft word and ebays Turbo Lister and was hoping these problems may all be connected.

Gary

Hi Rich, I have today finally managed to download IE7, by following some microsoft instructions. The box that said "Windows cannot find 'msconfig'....... did not appear. The problems with Turbo Lister and microsoft word have also gone. At last things seem to be working better. Thanks very much for your replies. Gary.
