On other computers, when I click on an mp3 internet file to downoad, the windows media player downloads and automatically plays the file. On my xp computer, when I click on the file, it quickly downloads to a temp folder (which I can't find), and it looks like it's about to play (the hourglass pops up), but then nothing happens. If I click on the file again, nothing happens, and if I bring up the media player, my computer freezes, and I need to shut it down manually. I tried to solve the issue by successfully downloading media player 11, and it did play one file when I clicked on it, but now we're back to the same problem. What can or should I do? Thanks.

Hi scott98,

Try using another program such as ITunes and even VLC Media Player. Hope everything works out well for you.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

What version of IE do you have?

Version? How many are there?

I see now the problem is when I click the mp3 file, everything freezes. I can't continue on the internet, no other programs come up, all I get is the desktop, and nothing works when I click it. What is going on?

My System

IE comes in many versions, for XP we are up to IE8 now. To find your version, open IE go up to Help/About Internet Explorer to find what version you have. If you have kept up with your Service Packs and Windows Updates you should have the latest version. Speaking of, What Service Pack of Windows do you have? Right click My Computer and choose Properties to find out computer specs and SP.
When you click on a MP3 in IE, you should be given the choice to Open the file or to Save it. Try saving the file to My Music, or your desktop or whatever, and play it with a different media player like VLC as dbcooper suggested.

Mine computer doesn't give me a choice. It opens up media player and plays the file but it doesn't download the file. If I want to download a mp3 or podcast I must use firefox.

XP pro
IE 8

Thanks for everyone's response. I have IE 8, and service pack 3. I also don't get a choice when I click on the download, it just says it is going to a temporary folder which I can't find, and then does nothing.

Send a message via Yahoo to sobeit

does everything you download go to the temp folder. Is this all mp3 or just from the specific site?

Click Start => My Computer => Tools => Folder options => Click on the tab File Types => Wait for the list to load then find MP3 => Click on MP3 and click Change => Set it to open with Windows Media Player and then tick the box to always open with this program.

If that fails Do you have these problems in any other browsers? Please try one of the below (both are free):

Firefox
Opera

Go The Power! You are awesome! First, you walked me thru step by step...I never would've found to do this. And then, it seems you solved the problem!
It had been set on something called Music Jukebox, whatever that is. I still wonder why it would freeze the whole computer.
If this keeps working, I'll be sure to root for South Australia in the next Olympics, and salute the flag when I see it. Thanks a bunch!
