On start-up I am getting the following message:

RUNDLL
An exception occurred while trying to run "C:\Windows|system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup"

clicking OK removes it and I notice no ill effects.
However I chanced to try and open the NVIDIA control panel by right click on the startup screen. This triggered an error report and the control panel fails to run.

I have XP, AVG and Zone alarm - all up to date.

Any ideas please?

Quote:
Try deleting the nvidia graphics driver (within safemode) , reboot the system and reinstalled the latest graphics driver from http://www.nvidia.com

http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

You can also use regedit to remove the reported error:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
In the Run folder you will be looking for a value that resembles the startup error you are receiving, such as:
NvCplDaemon RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINNT\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
Right click on it and select Delete. Close the Registry Editor and you’re done.
