I bought a desktop from a friend which worked ok (too slow) but about a month ago it caught a virus. Another friend decided to unstill and then reinstall windows using his cd-rom to "remove the virus" and clean out the computer. Apparantly it wasn't the same program or whatever so now im stuck on the Start up window with NO CD-ROM, FLOPPY DISK or anything..how can I reinstall it without spending money? And if I have to spend money, what do I need and is it expensive?
Hi and welcome to TSF. I'm sorry your having so much trouble. Computers are great but only when they are working huh? The fact that the computer that you have has no CD rom or Floopy drive is a real problem as the only way to fix the problem that you are having would appear to be a re-install of the operating system or at the very least a repair of the operating system. To accomplish this you will need the following:
A CD rom drive installed on this computer or an external CD rom drive that can be plugged into a USB port on the computer.
A licensed legal copy of the operating system the computer is running. XP Home or XP Pro, and it will have to be a disk with the service pack on it that your computer is currently running as well. You can fix an operating system running XP SP1 or 2 with a disk that has XP SP3 on it, but you can not fix it with a disk that has is an older version then the current operating system on the computer.
I know this doesn't help fix the problem but at least it will help show you what will be needed to fix the computer. If you are able to obtain these things I will be happy to help you in any way I can, simply let me know.
I will monitor this thread throughout the day. If you resolve this problem on your own or with the info I provided please let me know so I can move on to other issues.
