Hi,

Odd problem cropped up about a week ago. My boyfriend pointed out that the recycle bin has been renamed to "games (1)". I can't just rename it back either so I've no idea how to fix this. I did try going to the customize desktop feature from display>properties and selecting the restore default option but nothing happens so I'm not sure what else to try.

thanks,
Zelda ;)

Try registry fix #115 (Rename/Remove the Recycle Bin) at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Hi,
Right-click on your desktop.
Point to "New". Then select "Folder" to create a new folder.
Name the new folder
"Recycle Bin.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}".
then remove the other recycle bin from the desktop.

also, the new icon doesn't switch to full when there's something inside it :P but the old one will display the "full" version of the icon not the empty one :P

I dunno if this is relavent but I have no idea how this icon got renamed in the first place? Anyone have a clue? What happened was the recycle bin got it's name changed to "games (1)" and the name of my games folder on the desktop got changed to "667" :P

Taken from: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article02-010

# Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
# Open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ CLSID\ {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} (you can also select Find from the Edit menu, and search for "Recycle Bin.")
# Double-click (Default), and type the new name.
# Press OK and then close the Registry Editor.
# Click on the desktop, and press F5 to refresh the desktop so that this change will take effect.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It didn't work for me. How about you?

The regedit thing didn't work. The instructions on the website you got it from say that it's not for XP and somehow indicate that in XP you can just right click to rename the recycle bin (well I surely can't). I was able to find the registry value but could not enter anything into the name portion of the dialog box because it was grayed out.

I'm not sure what you want me to do in tweakUI. But I've already tried it to remove the recycle bin from the desktop by unchecking that icon from there and it doesn't really work correctly. So if there's another branch I should be checking out please let me know.

other than that since I dunno if tweakUI will work either any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Zelda ;)

I am not sure what state the recycle bin at CLSID {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} may be in now. MS-MVP Kelly Theriot has in her notes that you need to be sure you have the right attributes to rename or delete the Recycle Bin.

Start button, Run, regedit
Navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\ShellFolder

Value Name: Attributes
Data Type: REG_BINARY (Binary Value)
Value Data: (70 01 00 20=enable, 40 01 00 20=default)

Set the value of "Attributes" in the appropriate key below to "70 01 00 20", you will then be able to rename and/or delete any special folders by right-clicking them.

Exit regedit.

To delete or rename the Recycle Bin, do so in an Explorer pane rather than from the desktop. Or, with a registry edit:

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT

Go to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{647BD8C2-658B-4ECA-ABC7-FC5C0BF1704D}

Right click on the {647BD8C2-658B-4ECA-ABC7-FC5C0BF1704D} sub key and select Export (this way you can restore it if you want to). Next right click on the same key and select Delete. Go back to your desktop, right click and select Refresh. No more Recycle Bin.

Wow!!! hehe thanks a bunch that finally worked. So now that I got the recycle bin renamed can I change that registry value back to the way it was so I don't accidentially delete any special folders?

thanks again ;3

Glad you got it sorted.
Please go ahead and revert your registry change.

Best wishes.
